CLEVELAND – A pair of Miami University student-athletes swept Mid-American Conference Scholar Athlete of the Week honors for the week of Sept. 2-8 as redshirt sophomore middle hitter Jenny Ingle was the Female Scholar Athlete of the Week and redshirt senior runner Matt Marol was tabbed Male Scholar Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday. For both student-athletes, it is their first career MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week award.

Ingle (Ludlow Falls, Ohio), who carries a 3.85 grade-point average while majoring in kinesiology, was the star for the RedHawks volleyball team last weekend as she led Miami to a championship in its own Miami Invitational. She was named MVP of the tournament after recording 36 kills in two matches with a hitting percentage of .508. In a three-set win vs. Evansville on Friday, she had 15 kills and made only one error in 21 attempts for a hitting percentage of .667. She also contributed three blocks (one solo and two assisted). Ingle was even better in a come-from-behind win vs. Northern Kentucky on Saturday. She set a career high with 21 kills, and made it a double-double with 10 blocks (two solo and eight assisted). For the weekend she averaged 4.50 kills per set and 1.62 blocks per set, finishing with 44 points scored.

In addition to earning MAC Female Scholar Athlete of the Week, Ingle was also tabbed MAC East Division Offensive Player of the Week on Monday and Miami Female Athlete of the Week on Tuesday.

For the second straight week, Marol (Evanston, Ill.), who boasts a 3.78 GPA, was very strong for the RedHawks cross country team as he earned overall runner-up honors at the Miami Invitational on Saturday, which was Miami’s lone home meet of the year. The management and leadership major took second overall in a 5K personal-best time of 14:57.6, just two seconds behind race winner Dave Wing, Marol’s teammate from Miami. Their 1-2 finish helped Miami earn runner-up as a team at the meet, which included the unveiling of Miami’s new cross country course. The individual second-place finish was Marol’s best ever at a collegiate meet while running against a field of 63 runners, including MAC rival Ohio.

In addition to his major, Marol is an entrepreneurship minor. He has also been named Academic All-MAC the last two cross country seasons.

Ingle and the volleyball team return to the court at the Billiken Challenge in St. Louis this weekend when Miami will face host Saint Louis on Friday and both Bradley and Youngstown State on Saturday. Marol and the men’s cross country team next run Saturday when they head south to Lexington, Ky. for the Bluegrass Invitational.

The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during the week’s competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference’s faculty athletic representatives.
