PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Stanford showed why it was the 12th-seed in the 2013 NCAA Tournament on Friday, easing past Miami 4-0 in a first-round matchup.
Miami, the Mid-American Conference regular-season and tournament champion, was outmatched from the start as Nimisha Mohan and Alix Thurman were shutout for the first time all season, 8-0 at No. 2. The RedHawks' other two teams won their opening games, but quickly found themselves in a hole. The Cardinal's No. 1 team won the next seven games enroute to an 8-2 victory over Christine Guerrazzi and Ana Rajkovic.
In singles play, Guerrazzi captured just one game in dropping the No. 4 match, 6-0, 6-1. Stanford opened a 3-0 lead when Mohan fell 6-1, 6-0 in the top flight. The clinching match was at No. 5, when Rajkovic also fell by a 6-0, 6-1 count.
Thurman was trailing 6-3, 4-0 when her match was halted, but the other two matches were closer. Raymond dropped her first set 6-3 and was down 2-1 in the second, while Costea led 4-1 in her second set after falling 6-2 in the first.
Miami has won just one of 18 completed sets in three NCAA Tournament appearances, and have never won a match. The RedHawks finish the season 13-13
