AKRON, Ohio – Behind a pair of individual fourth-place finishes Thursday, the Miami University men’s track and field team sits in a fourth-place tie after day one of the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships, hosted by the University of Akron at Lee R. Jackson Track & Field Complex.

The RedHawks compiled 12 points in the two event finals held on opening day, tying with Buffalo for fourth place. Kent State is in first through two events with 24 points, followed by the host Zips and Eastern Michigan in a second-place tie with 14 points. Central Michigan is in sixth place after day one with two points to round out the men’s field.

Junior Dave Wing (Naperville, Ill.) closed strong on the final few laps to earn fourth in the 10,000m run final, the lone track event on day one, crossing in a personal-best 31:17.69 to earn five points. Senior Matt Marol (Evanston, Ill.) picked up another point by placing eighth in the 10K in 31:27.21.

Miami earned a combined six points in the javelin as well, the lone field event final of the day, led by sophomore Tyler Yee (Florida, N.Y.), who placed fourth with a personal-best heave of 64.35m/211-1. He improved his previous best by nearly six feet while he now ranks second in school history in the event. Junior Taylor Celestin (Mason, Ohio) also posted a personal best in the javelin, taking eighth with a throw of 56.93m/186-9 to improve on his previous best by over 10 feet while picking up one point.

Sophomore Sam Chester (Medina, Ohio) battled through a leg injury to rest in eighth place at the halfway point of the decathlon with 3,541 points through five events, posting personal bests in three events. He earned his most points in the 100m dash, winning his heat and taking third overall in a personal-best 11.14 for 830 points in the 13-man field. Chester also placed fourth in the shot put with another personal best of 12.81m/42-0.5 and took fifth in the 400m dash in 50.42, also a personal best. The final five events of the decathlon take place Friday.

The MAC Championships resume Friday at 10 a.m. with the hammer throw final, while the long jump and shot put finals are also on Friday. The decathlon continues at noon with the 110m hurdles while the first track event is the 110m hurdles prelims at 2:40 p.m. Day two concludes at 6:20 p.m. with the 3,000m steeplechase final.
