COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Miami University men's track and field team began preparations for its outdoor season by competing in its first indoor meet of the year Friday at the Buckeye Tune-Up, hosted by Ohio State at French Field House. The RedHawks posted nine top-five finishes at the indoor meet, one of two indoor meets Miami will compete in as allowed by NCAA rules.
Senior Jarrod Eick (Hartville, Ohio) captured the 1000m run in a personal-best 2:29.68 while junior Wade Coffin (Willoughby, Ohio) was right behind in second in 2:30.73, also a personal best. In the 600m run, two RedHawks placed in the top five, led by junior Kevin Brown (Lewis Center, Ohio), who earned runner-up in 1:21.72. Freshman Joey Comisford (Granville, Ohio) crossed in fifth in 1:22.51.
Freshman Peter Stefanski (Aurora, Ill.) had a strong collegiate debut, placing second in the high jump with a clearance of 2.09m/6-10.25. His height equaled Tiffin's Eugene Cannady, who won the event, but Stefanski required an extra attempt to clear the bar. In the pole vault, senior Sam Wildeman (Naperville, Ill.) claimed third, topping 4.72m/15-5.75.
In the long jump, junior Sam Spallinger (Pandora, Ohio) led the way by capturing third with a personal-best leap of 7.27m/23-10.25. Sophomore Sam Chester (Medina, Ohio) was seventh with an indoor personal-best jump of 6.71m/22-0.25 while junior Calen Settles (Cincinnati, Ohio) was right behind in eighth, jumping 6.70m/21-11.75, which marks his personal-best effort.
Redshirt senior Brett Wagner (Toledo, Ohio) had a strong showing in the 3000m run, crossing in fifth in a personal-best 8:32.53. Senior Matt Marol (Evanston, Ill.) was ninth with an indoor personal-best 8:48.16. In the mile run, senior Jack Spilman (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) took ninth, clocking 4:23.84.
In the sprints, junior Jahquil Hargrove (Norristown, Pa.) finished sixth in the 400m dash in 50.19 while classmate Robert Balzano (Poland, Ohio) crossed in eighth in an indoor personal-best 50.61. Chester qualified for the finals of the 60m hurdles, placing seventh in prelims in 8.30 while he finished eighth in the final in 8.25.
Miami grabbed fifth in the 4x400m relay as sophomore Skyler Coburn (La Porte, Ind.) and freshman Adam Bodrick (Columbus, Ohio), along with Balzano and Hargrove, combined to clock 3:23.11. Freshman Jason Bailey (Springboro, Ohio) ran in a pair of sprints, taking 11th in the 200m dash in 23.30 while he was 15th in the 60m dash in 7.15.
In the throws, junior Rob Stein (Villa Park, Ill.) placed 11th in the shot put with a heave of 14.51m/47-7.25.
The RedHawks are back in action Friday, March 1 when they compete in their second and final indoor meet of the season, which is a dual meet with Cincinnati in Columbus on the campus of Capital University. Miami opens outdoor season March 22-23 at the Vanderbilt Black and Gold Invitational.
