MILWAUKEE – The Miami University volleyball team continued its perfect start to the 2014 season with a 3-1 (25-11, 22-25, 25-12, 25-19) victory over Robert Morris on Friday at the Panther Invitational. Junior outside hitter Annie Reiswig and sophomore middle hitter Paige Hill led a balanced offensive attack with nine kills each. The RedHawks improve to 2-0 overall, while the Colonials fall to 0-2.

Senior setter/outside hitter Meg Riley continued her strong start to her season with her second consecutive double-double. She recorded 21 assists and 11 digs. She finished two kills shy of a triple double with eight. Riley also assisted on four blocks.

Miami came ready to play right off the bat in set one. The Red and White scored the first 11 points, led by three kills from Hill and two from Riley. The two of them also teamed up to contribute two blocks. Robert Morris answered with a 7-4 run to pull within eight at 7-15, but two straight kills by freshman middle hitter Meredith Stutz, a kill from freshman outside hitter Olivia Rusek and a block by Stutz and Rusek started a run of seven straight points for the RedHawks to put the set out of reach at 21-7. A kill by freshman middle hitter Courtney Bemis from freshman libero Maeve McDonald finished off the 25-11 win.

Set two was back-and-forth with neither team able to build a lead of more than three points. With the score tied at 15, kills from Reiswig and sophomore outside hitter Maris Below were part of a 4-1 run that gave Miami a 19-16 advantage, but the Colonials answered with a 5-1 run of their own to take a 21-20 lead. Senior outside hitter Sarah Chaney recorded a kill to tie the score, but RMU closed with a 4-1 run to take a 25-22 victory.

The RedHawks made their move in set three with the score tied at eight. Kills from Reiswig and Hill, and a service ace by sophomore setter Krista Brakauskas were part of a 9-1 run that put Miami in control at 17-9. After a Colonial point, kills from Rusek, Stutz and Riley helped the ‘Hawks push the advantage to 22-11. A kill by Bemis finished off the 25-12 win for Miami.

Robert Morris was able to open up an 11-9 lead to begin set four. A pair of kills by Reiswig helped the RedHawks tie the score at 13, but two straight kills by the Colonials put them back in front, 15-13. Trailing 15-16, a kill and a block from redshirt junior middle hitter Jenny Ingle started a 7-1 run that put Miami in control at 22-17. Hill scored the final two points for the ‘Hawks to finish off a 25-19 victory.

McDonald led Miami with 21 digs, while Brakauskas had 26 assists. The RedHawks hit .236 for the match, and held Robert Morris to a .092 hitting percentage.

Miami goes for the Panther Invitational title on Saturday when they take on the host Milwaukee Panthers at 2 p.m. (EDT).
