Oxford, OH – The Miami men’s cross country team opens their 2014 season on Saturday at the Flyer 5K Challenge hosted by the University of Dayton. The men’s race will begin at 10:45 at Indian Riffle Park in Kettering, Ohio just outside of Dayton.

This is the 12th year that the Miami will begin their season at the Flyer 5k. The RedHawks will compete against Capital, Dayton, Denison, Louisville, Northern Kentucky, Ohio State, Wittenberg and Wright State.

Last season the ‘Hawks finished in third place overall with a score of 53 in a close race with Ohio State and IUPUI. Sophomore Stephen Biebelhausen, junior Matt Stewart and redshirt junior Ryan Moncrieff are looking to improve on their performances last year after finishing in spots 14-16 overall.

This meet mark the beginning of head coach Warren Mandrell’s 21st season coaching the RedHawks.

A core of returning runners, including senior Daniel Garleb and juniors Joe Stewart, Matt Stewart, Zack McBride and Ryan Moncrieff will anchor the team this year for Miami. Redshirt freshman Andrew Dusing is also expected to be an important contributor to the RedHawks' fortunes this year.

This meet also marks the first collegiate meet for freshmen Matt Bromley, Jake Brumfield, Ben Metzger, Ryan Pitner and Zac Thompson. Redshirt freshman Jordan Knapp is also supposed to make his debut.

The ‘Hawks were ranked 14th in the Great Lakes Region by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) in the preseason poll. The Red and White are looking to improve on last year’s 12th-place performance at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional after injuries plagued them late in the season.
