Phil Steele and Phil Steele’s College Football Preview named six RedHawks to its preseason All-MAC team, announced this afternoon (June 2). Bryson Albright (third-team), Fred McRae (third-team), Andrew Hendrix (fourth-team), Alex Welsch (fourth-team), Zach Lewis (fourth-team) and Kent Kern (fourth-team) were named to the team.
Albright started all 12 games last season, finishing the year with 55 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss and a team-high five sacks. His breakout game of 2013 came versus Bowling Green in which he had seven tackles and three sacks, both career-bests.
McRae joins the All-MAC team as a punt returner after finishing the 2013 season with a return average of 9.2 per kick. In all, he had 12 returns for 110 yards to lead the Mid-American Conference in punt return average.
Hendrix and Welch come to Miami as fifth-year transfers from Notre Dame. When Miami plays host to Marshall on Aug. 30, both Hendrix and Welch will be seeing their first action in the Red & White. Hendrix, a Moeller graduate comes to Miami after completing 25-of-58 passes for 360 yards and one touchdown in his career. Welch, also a local graduate (Elder), played in 22 games with the Fighting Irish, finishing his career with one catch for eight yards.
Lewis played in and started 11 games last season at left tackle for the RedHawks and has played in 32 games (28 starts) in his Miami career.
Kern earned second-team All-MAC last season after finishing with 98 tackles, 5.0 tackles for loss and two pass breakups. He recorded double-digit tackle performances five times in 2013 and recorded a career-high 15 tackles versus arch-rival Cincinnati.
