OXFORD, Ohio – For their performances last week baseball’s senior pitcher Seth Varner and tennis junior Alix Thurman are Miami’s Athletes of the Week connected by Frontier Communications for the week of April 21-27.

Varner put together yet another dominant start for the RedHawks, setting the tone in their weekend series with Toledo on Friday evening. The senior lefty tossed the first complete game of his career by yielding only two hits while walking only two batters in a tight 1-0 victory. He fanned a career-high 12 batters, including 11 over the first five innings. Varner poured 83 of his 115 pitches into the strike zone to improve to 6-2 on the season while lowering his ERA to 2.51.

This is the second time this season and third time in his career that Varner has been named Miami’s Male Athlete of the Week. He last won it for the week of Feb. 24-March 2.

Thurman was named the MAC Women’s Tennis Tournament MVP, helping Miami to its second straight MAC Tournament title and its fourth in the last six years. Thurman helped Miami notch a 4-0 win against Buffalo in the tournament semifinals on Saturday. After a hard-fought loss in doubles, Thurman clinched the MAC Tournament crown for the RedHawks with her 1-6, 6-4, 7-5 (7-3) win at No. 4 singles to give Miami its fourth point in a grueling 4-2 win over Eastern Michigan. The RedHawks earn an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament May 9-11.

This is the first time this season and second time in her career that Thurman has been named Miami’s Female Athlete of the Week. She last won it the week of March 5-11, 2012.
