Last Week: The RedHawks played five home games as part of their final home stretch of the regular season. MU opened the week with a 10-2 setback against Dayton (Recap), but showed some resilience the next day against Eastern Kentucky. The RedHawks fought back from a 4-3 deficit in the ninth to force extra innings, but fell 7-5 in a 14-inning decision that tied the school record for longest game. (Recap) Two days later, the RedHawks went to the other extreme by playing a one hour, 37 minute pitcher's duel. Seth Varner tossed his first-career complete game shutout by fanning 12 batters and allowing only two hits in a 1-0 win over Toledo on Friday. (Recap) Toledo evened the series up on Saturday when it scored 13 runs over its first four innings to top Miami 13-5. (Recap) Before the game, Miami held its the groundbreaking ceremony for the Legacy Project at Hayden Park (Story). MU ended the weekend on a high note by grinding out a 5-3 win over UT thanks to seven strong innings by Ryan Powers and Dan Walsh's two-run single in the fourth. (Recap) This Week: Miami wraps up its home stand with a Wednesday game against Indiana before hosting Bowling Green for a three-game set beginning on Friday.
Last Week: The RedHawks dropped two games on the road at Ball State last weekend. Miami kept the high-powered Cardinal softball team in check for the majority of the game, but BSU scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 2-1 win Saturday afternoon. (Recap) The RedHawks fell to Ball State, 9-1, in their series finale on Sunday. The game ended in five innings due to the run rule. (Recap) Prior to the games on Monday, head coach Clarisa Crowell announced the signing of Rylee Whispel to a National Letter of Intent. (Release) This Week: The final week of the regular season is upon Miami. The RedHawks return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Butler for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. Miami hosts Eastern Michigan on Friday for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. The RedHawks then face Central Michigan in single games on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. Sunday’s game will be Senior Day, with Ledbetter, Arbour, Paige Myers, Brandi Hernandez and Allie Larrabee honored in a pregame ceremony.
Last Week: Miami captured its second straight MAC Tournament title with a gritty 4-2 win over Eastern Michigan on Sunday afternoon at the Hepburn Courts on Miami’s campus. The RedHawks gutted out four singles’ wins to capture the match. (Recap) Miami blanked Buffalo 4-0 on Saturday afternoon in the semifinals to advance to the title match. (Recap) Senior Nimisha Mohan and junior Alix Thurman were named to the All-Tournament Team and Thurman notched Tournament MVP honors. Earlier in the week, freshman Andreea Badileanu was named the MAC Freshman of the Year and also earned Second-Team All-MAC plaudits, while head coach Anca Dumitrescu was tabbed MAC Coach of the Year. Senior Nimisha Mohan was the other RedHawk to garner postseason recognition with her selection to the All-MAC First Team. (Release) Mohan also was tabbed MAC Singles Player of the Week for her performances the previous week against Western Michigan and Bowling Green. (Release) This Week: Miami awaits its pairing for the NCAA Tournament, which will take place May 9-11 at campus sites.
Men's Track and Field
Last Week: Most of Miami's squad stayed in Oxford for last Saturday's RedHawk Invitational, but distance runners Dave Wing and Joe Stewart competed at the Penn Relays earlier in the week. Wing set a new personal best in the 10,000m with a time of 30:07.56, the fastest recorded in the MAC this season, which was good for 10th place. Stewart took 15th in the 5000m with a time of 14:40.35. (Recap) On Saturday, the RedHawks posted six event victories at their final home meet of the season. (Recap) This Week: Miami heads to the Billy Hayes Invitational on Friday in Bloomington, Ind.
Women's Track and Field
Last Week: Tori Paterra and Amelia Strickler began Miami's weekend in strong fashion at the 105th Drake Relays. Paterra finished runner-up in the javelin throw on Friday, marking her first throw 167-11 to grab an early lead before eventually finishing second. Strickler posted the second-farthest shot put throw in school history with a toss of 49-7, which was good for fifth at the historic meet. (Recap) The rest of the team remained in Oxford for the RedHawk Invitational, which saw four Red and White jerseys win their respective events on Saturday. Melissa Gergis claimed the 5000m (18:01.44), Megan Beaver paced the field in the 800m (career-best 2:13.80), Erica Howes took first in the 3000m steeplechase (10:46.83) and Adaora Anunike out threw her competition in the discus (158-6) for the RedHawks. (Recap) This Week: Miami competes at the Billy Hayes Invitational for its final regular season home meet on Friday in Bloomington, Ind.
Last Week: Miami was idle last week. However, head coach Zac Zedrick announced the signing of a new student-athlete to the team. Brian Ohr has signed a National Letter of Intent and will play for Miami during the 2014-15 season. (Release) This Week: The RedHawks compete in the MAC Championship Thursday through Saturday in Carmel, Ind. Miami will play 36 holes on Thursday. The ‘Hawks will complete the 72-hole event with single rounds of 18 holes on Friday and Saturday.
Miami University head women’s basketball coach Cleve Wright announced the signing of Jazz Smith to a National Letter of Intent on Tuesday. Smith will begin play for the RedHawks during the 2014-15 season. (Release) The women’s basketball team also had three members selected Honorable Mention Academic All-MAC. (Release)
