CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Miami University softball team heads to the warmth of Clearwater, Florida for the Michelle Smith Spring Break Tournament this weekend. On Friday, the RedHawks take on Maine at 9:30 a.m. and Seton Hall at 11:45 a.m. On Saturday, Miami faces Connecticut at 9:30 a.m. and Boston University at 2:15 p.m. The RedHawks complete play at the tournament when they take on Saint Joseph’s on Sunday at 9 a.m.
LEDBETTER MOVING UP MIAMI RECORD BOOKS: Senior catcher Kayla Ledbetter is climbing the top 10 list of three different Miami offensive career categories. She now has 14 home runs, which is tied for eighth in school history. She also has 77 RBI, which is tied for ninth. Finally, Ledbetter is chasing the all-time school record for walks. She currently has walked 77 times during her career, which ranks fourth. The school record is held by Daniela Torres (2008-12), who walked 89 times during her career.
ABOUT MAINE: Maine is 5-5 on the season. The Black Bears have been down in Clearwater playing in multiple tournaments since March 2. They have won four of their past five games, with their only setback an 8-0 loss to Miami’s MAC rival Toledo on March 8. Maine has been led offensively by junior outfielder Jessica Burk. She is hitting .346 with two RBI. Its top pitcher has been senior Kylie Sparks. She is 2-2 with a 2.88 ERA in five appearances (four starts).
SERIES WITH MAINE: Miami holds a 4-1 all-time lead in the series with Maine. The teams last met on Feb. 25, 2006 at the Panera Classic in Chattanooga, Tenn. The Black Bears came away with a 1-0 victory in that contest.
ABOUT SETON HALL: Seton Hall is 4-17 on the season. The Pirates went 1-4 at the USF Under Armour Showcase last week, defeating Quinnipiac, but falling to Chattanooga, Utah, Central Michigan and Maine. They also lost a 6-0 contest to Penn last Tuesday. Seton Hall has been led offensively by senior third baseman Meredith Henze. She is hitting .328 with seven home runs and 13 RBI. Its top pitcher has been junior Casey Moses. She is 1-7 with a 7.16 ERA in 14 appearances (eight starts).
SERIES WITH SETON HALL: Miami holds a 2-1 lead in the all-time series with the Pirates. The teams met last season on March 15 at the San Diego Classic. The game went extra innings, with Seton Hall eventually coming away with a 6-5, nine-inning victory.
ABOUT CONNECTICUT: Connecticut is 4-10 on the season. The Huskies went 3-1 at the Winthrop Adidas Invitational last weekend. They earned wins against Youngstown State, Eastern Kentucky and Wright State before falling to Norfolk State in the finale. UConn has been led offensively by sophomore infielder Valerie Sadowl. She is hitting .471 with two home runs and seven RBI. Its top pitcher has been junior Lauren Duggan. She is 3-6 with a 3.61 ERA in 11 appearances (six starts).
SERIES WITH CONNECTICUT: The series between Miami and Connecticut is tied at three wins apiece. The teams last met at the Buzz Classic in Woodstock, Ga. on March 6, 2011. The RedHawks earned a 3-2 victory in that contest.
ABOUT BOSTON UNIVERSITY: Boston University is 8-8 on the season. The Terriers went 2-3 at the USF Under Armour Showcase last weekend, defeating Southern Illinois and Providence, but falling to Toledo, Cleveland State and Villanova. While spending the past week down in Florida, they won midweek games against Quinnipiac and Cleveland State. BU has been led offensively by senior catcher Jayme Mask. She is hitting .426 with eight RBI on the season. Its top pitcher has been sophomore Melanie Russell. She is 3-2 with a 2.82 ERA is eight appearances (six starts).
SERIES WITH BOSTON UNIVERSITY: The series between Miami and Boston University is tied at one win apiece. The teams last met at the Under Armour Showcase in Clearwater, Fla. on March 11, 2012. The Terriers scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to earn a 2-1 win.
ABOUT SAINT JOSEPH’S: Saint Joseph’s is 6-6 on the season. The Hawks went 3-2 at the USF Under Armour Showcase last weekend, defeating Maine, Western Michigan and Providence, while falling to Southern Illinois and USF. Saint Joseph’s top hitter has been junior infielder Nicole Palase. She is hitting .306 with two home runs and nine RBI. Its top pitcher has been sophomore Liz Mendez. She is 3-3 with a 3.42 ERA in nine appearances (seven starts).
SERIES WITH SAINT JOSEPH’S: This is the first meeting between Miami and Saint Joseph’s.
UP NEXT FOR MIAMI: The RedHawks return home next Thursday for a doubleheader against Wright State that begins at 5 p.m. Miami then travels to suburban Pittsburgh for a recently added tournament at Robert Morris on Saturday, March 22. The ‘Hawks will take on the host Colonials at 11 a.m. and follow it up with a game against Siena at 1:30 p.m.
