OXFORD, Ohio – After several weeks on the road, the Miami University softball team will open the home season with a pair of doubleheaders. The RedHawks will take on Austin Peay Saturday with game one beginning at 3 p.m. in their originally scheduled contests. Miami has just added a doubleheader with Canisius that will be played Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.

The RedHawks (4-8) overall are coming off a 1-3 performance at the Coach B Classic last weekend. Miami defeated Murray State, 7-1, to open the event on Saturday, but dropped two games to Southern Illinois, and one against Kansas to close the tournament.

Through 12 games, senior second baseman Kristy Arbour leads the ‘Hawks with a .359 average, while junior outfielder Bree Lipscomb leads Miami with two home runs and 10 RBI. Senior pitcher Paige Myers has a 3-2 record with a 3.05 ERA in eight appearances (five starts). She has struck out 24 on the season.

Austin Peay is 8-11 overall. The Lady Govs have won four games in a row, including sweeping a doubleheader at Alabama A&M on Wednesday. APSU has been led offensively by senior Lauren de Castro. She is hitting .447 with one home run and six RBI. She is also the Lady Govs’ top pitcher with a 5-4 record and 4.34 ERA in 10 appearances (nine starts).

Austin Peay holds a 2-1 lead in the all-time series with Miami, with each of the three meetings coming in the last two seasons. The Lady Govs won a pair of games against the RedHawks last season at the Red and Black Tournament in Louisville. APSU used the international tiebreaker rule to its advantage in a 4-3, eight inning win on March 8. Two days later, the Lady Govs took a 5-1 victory over Miami.

Canisius is 2-7 on the season. The Golden Griffins have not played since they were Holiday Inn Hilltopper Spring Fling with the RedHawks two weeks ago. Canisius has been led offensively by sophomore infielder Alexis Roman. She is hitting .391 with two RBI. Its top pitcher has been senior Jen Consaul. She is 1-3 with a 2.50 ERA in six appearances (five starts).

Canisius holds a 2-1 lead all-time against Miami. The teams met earlier this season on Feb. 21 in Bowling Green, Ky. with the RedHawks earning a 5-0 win. Myers pitched a complete game shutout, allowing only three hits. Junior shortstop Kylie McChesney drove in all five RBI for Miami on a pair of hits.

The RedHawks return to the road next weekend for the Michelle Smith Spring Break Tournament in Clearwater, Fla. On Friday, March 14, Miami takes on Maine at 9:30 a.m. and Seton Hall at 11:45 a.m. On Saturday, March 15, the RedHawks face Connecticut at 9:30 a.m. and Boston University at 2:15 p.m. The tournament concludes on Sunday, March 16, when Miami takes on Saint Joseph’s at 9:30 a.m.
