ALLENDALE, Mich. – Sophomore Laura Bess added another first-place finish to her impressive indoor season at the GVSU Big Meet, hosted by Grand Valley State University at the Kelly Family Sports Center. The RedHawks finished fifth in the invitational events with 26.50 points, and will not be competing in the open meet events Saturday.
Bess won the mile with a career-high time of 4:49.21, six seconds faster than the time she posted last week at the Akron Invitational when she won the mile race. Bess’ time now ranks second on Miami’s All-Time list. Junior Charlotte Myers also had a strong performance in the 800m run, finishing second overall with a time of 2:10.02.
"Charlotte Myers was amazing," head coach Kelly Phillips said. "I mean, she had a slow heat and she ran at the front from the start, and just blasted it. She completely ran by herself start to finish and it was awesome. She's new to the 800m and she just really got after it. It was really exciting to watch."
Junior Taylor Wickware then placed 12th in the event in 2:12.24, while freshman Lauren Hoover and McKenna Kiple took the 25th and 26th spots. Hoover finished the race in 2:15.48, while Kiple stayed close on Hoover’s heels and crossed the finish line in 2:15.53.
Concluding long distance action for the RedHawks, junior Anna Lamb placed eighth in the 5000m run with a time of 17:04.46. In sprint events, freshman Alexus Jimson-Miller finished tenth out of 33 competitors in the 60m hurdles preliminaries with a time of 8.82, but missed out on making the finals later in the evening.
Junior Adaora Anunike led the way for Miami in field action, finishing third in the weight throw with a mark of 16.59m. Sophomore Amelia Strickler took seventh in the event with a throw of 15.28m, then took sixth in the shot put with a mark of 15.03m.
Miami concluded Friday night’s events with a fourth-place finish in the 4x400 relay after Jimson-Miller, sophomore Kala Allen, Wickware, and Myers posted a combined time of 3:48.14.
The RedHawks will have one more tune-up meet Friday, Feb. 21 at the Ball State Quadrangular in Muncie, Ind. before taking on the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Indoor Championships Friday, Feb. 28.
