OXFORD, Ohio – The NCAA announced the 2013 Field Hockey Championship bracket Sunday evening. The Miami University field hockey team will travel to Michigan State on Wednesday for a play-in game that will begin at 2 p.m.
The RedHawks are making their first NCAA Tournament appearance in school history after winning the Mid-American Conference Tournament Championship for the second straight season over the weekend. A format change in the NCAA Tournament this year increased the field to 19 teams and has allowed all 11 conferences that sponsor the sport to earn automatic bids. It is the second time in school history Miami has participated in a national tournament. The Red and White participated in the MAIAW Regionals and the USFH Championship Tournament in 1980 during the pre-NCAA era.
Michigan State is 12-9 overall after winning the Big Ten Tournament over the weekend. The Spartans overcame a 2-0 deficit to defeat Iowa, 3-2, Sunday afternoon in the championship game.
Miami and Michigan State played each other in the regular season on Oct. 6 in Oxford. The RedHawks came away with a 2-0 victory in that contest. Freshman midfielder Carla Romagosa and junior back Ali Froede each scored goals for Miami, while senior goalkeeper Sarah Mueller made five saves for the shutout.
The winner of the NCAA Play-In Round game will advance to the Syracuse Regional this weekend. That team will take on the number two national seed and host Syracuse in a First Round game on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Connecticut and Boston College will also be participating in that regional.
