OXFORD, Ohio – For the second time in her career, junior Jess Hoover has received conference honors following a solid cross country performance. After pacing the RedHawks at the Greater Louisville Classic Saturday, Oct. 5, Hoover was named Mid-American Conference Women’s Runner of the Week, the league office decided Wednesday.
Hoover (Hilliard, Ohio) and the RedHawks faced some of their toughest competition Saturday at the Greater Louisville Classic hosted by the Louisville Sports Commission at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park. Racing against a 32-team field, Hoover jumped out in front at the very start of the race, keeping up with runners from Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Texas A&M. Despite getting passed by a pack of competitors after the first mile, Hoover stayed within the top ten, and was the eighth finisher of Division 1 schools in 17:31.05. Hoover led Miami to a fifth-place finish at the Louisville Classic.
This is Hoover’s second MAC Runner of the Week award, earning the honor after winning the 2013 Miami Invitational September 7 where she ran the 5K in a personal-best 17:13.6. Hoover was named Second-Team All-MAC during her freshman season, and just missed out repeating All-MAC honors last season when she finished 15th overall at the 2012 MAC Championship.
Hoover and the rest of the RedHawks are back in action Saturday, Oct. 19 when they compete at Pre-Nationals in Terre-Haute, Ind. The race will begin at 11 a.m.
