CLEVELAND – The Mid-American Conference announced its weekly field hockey awards on Tuesday. For the second time this season, Miami was able to sweep both awards. Freshman midfielder Carla Romagosa was named MAC Offensive Player of the Week, while senior goalkeeper Sarah Mueller was named MAC Defensive Player of the Week.
This is the first weekly honor of Romagosa’s career. She was the star of Miami’s 2-0 win over Michigan State on Sunday. She scored the game’s first goal in the 40th minute, which proved to be the game winner. In order to provide some insurance, she set up junior Ali Froede for a great goal on a penalty corner in the 57th minute to give the RedHawks a 2-0 win. She led Miami with three shots on the day.
This is the second time this season and sixth time in her career that Mueller has won a MAC weekly award. She earned her 11th career shutout against the Spartans, which was Miami’s only game of the week. She made five saves in net and stopped a pair of breakaways by coming out of the net and knocking the ball away before the Spartans were able to even get off a shot. As a result of those extra defensive efforts, MSU finished with only eight shots total for the contest.
Miami begins MAC play on Friday when it hosts Ball State at 5:30 p.m.
