OXFORD, Ohio – It hasn’t even been a week since the Miami University women’s cross country team had its season debut and already it has earned an award. Junior Jess Hoover was named Mid-American Conference Women’s Runner of the Week, the league office decided Thursday.

Hoover (Hilliard, Ohio) was a force to be reckoned with Saturday, Sept. 7 at the 2013 Miami Invitational, the team’s season-opening race at the new Miami Cross Country Course. She set the pace at the very start of the run and held the lead throughout the entire 5K to win the invitational in a personal-best 17:13.6 for her first collegiate victory. Hoover finished an entire 10 seconds faster than teammate Anna Lamb, who was runner-up, and 16.6 seconds faster than Ohio All-American Juli Accurso, who took fourth behind Miami’s top three finishers. There was no team scoring for the field of 50 runners from Miami, Ohio, Capital, Shawnee State, the Miami alumni team and the Miami cross country club team.

The MAC Runner of the Week Award is the first such honor of Hoover’s career, though she was Second-Team All-MAC during her freshman season. She just missed out on repeating All-MAC honors last season when she finished 15th overall at the 2012 MAC Championship. Hoover was also picked as one of two Miami Female Athletes of the Week on Tuesday.

Hoover and the rest of the RedHawks are back in action Friday night at the Mel Brodt Collegiate Opener in Bowling Green, Ohio. The race starts at 7:10 p.m.
