OXFORD, Ohio – After three RedHawks were the top performer at their respective events, redshirt sophomore middle hitter Jenny Ingle and junior runner Jess Hoover are the co-Miami Female Athletes of the Week connected by Frontier Communications while senior runner Dave Wing is again the Miami Male Athlete of the Week for the week of Sept. 2-8.
Ingle (Ludlow Falls, Ohio) was the star for the RedHawks’ volleyball team last weekend as she led Miami to a championship in its own Miami Invitational. She was named MVP of the tournament after recording 36 kills in two matches with a hitting percentage of .508. In a three-set win vs. Evansville on Friday, she had 15 kills and made only one error in 21 attempts for a hitting percentage of .667. She also contributed three blocks (one solo and two assisted). Ingle was even better in a come-from-behind win vs. Northern Kentucky on Saturday. She set a career high with 21 kills, and made it a double-double with 10 blocks (two solo and eight assisted). For the weekend she averaged 4.50 kills per set and 1.62 blocks per set, finishing with 44 points scored.
The Miami Female Athlete of the Week honor is the second of Ingle’s career, also earning it once as a freshman last year. She was also named Mid-American Conference East Division Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.
Hoover (Hilliard, Ohio) earned her first collegiate victory on Saturday as she won the RedHawks’ own Miami Cross Country Invitational, which was the team’s only home meet of the year and was run on the program’s brand new course. Hoover led the race from start to finish, crossing with a winning time of 17:13.6. She finished 10 seconds ahead of her classmate Anna Lamb, who was the runner-up. She also finished ahead of Ohio’s Juli Accurso, who is a two-time All-American. Hoover was running against a field of 50 women.
Hoover has now earned Miami Female Athlete of the Week twice in her career, earning it once as a sophomore last year, as well.
Like Hoover, Wing (Naperville, Ill.) was the individual champion at the Miami Cross Country Invitational to pick up his first collegiate cross country victory. He crossed in a winning time of 14:55.3, a 44-second improvement from his season-opening time at the Flyer 5K, while he was two seconds ahead of teammate Matt Marol, who was the runner-up. Wing was running in a field of 63 runners and helped Miami place second out of seven teams.
Wing has now collected Miami Male Athlete of the Week honors each of the last two weeks, the only two of his career, after also garnering MAC Runner of the Week last week for placing second at the Flyer 5K.
Ingle and the volleyball team head to the Billiken Challenge in St. Louis this weekend when Miami will face Saint Louis on Friday and both Bradley and Youngstown State on Saturday. Hoover and women’s cross country returns to action on Friday night at the Mel Brodt Collegiate Opener in Bowling Green, Ohio while Wing and the men’s team are in Lexington, Ky.
