CLEVELAND - Just one week into the season and a member of the Miami University men’s cross country team has already collected an award, as senior Dave Wing was named Mid-American Conference Men’s Runner of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.

Wing (Naperville, Ill.) had a strong season debut for the RedHawks, earning overall runner-up honors at the Flyer 5K Challenge, hosted by the University of Dayton on Saturday, Aug. 31. He was Miami’s top scorer, clocking a time of 15:39.0, as he finished just 1.1 seconds behind the race’s winner, Jordan Redd from Ohio State. His second-place finish tied his personal-best finish in a collegiate race from 2011 while he improved upon his seventh-place showing at last year’s Flyer 5K. Wing was competing against a field of 110 runners, which included athletes from OSU, Dayton, Xavier, IUPUI, Wright State, Northern Kentucky and more. Wing led Miami to a third-place finish at the meet.

The MAC Runner of the Week Award is the first such honor of Wing’s career, though he was a Second-Team All-MAC selection last year. He was also chosen as Miami’s Male Athlete of the Week on Tuesday.

Wing and the rest of the RedHawks are back in action this Saturday at their own Miami Invitational as Miami unveils its brand new cross country course off Bonham Road just past Yager Stadium. The women’s race begins at 10 a.m. while the men’s race starts at 10:45 a.m.
