OXFORD, Ohio – With Summer Orientation allowing incoming freshmen to visit Miami University’s campus through the next two weeks, MURedHawks.com continues its series to introduce the newest athletic recruits to their future classmates.
Today’s story features four incoming football players.
Xavier Swinton: Defensive Back, 6-1, 195, West Palm Beach, FL –American Heritage School –Coach Stacey Sizemore
Coming to Miami with prep teammate Jake Giordano, Xavier recorded 67 tackles, eight pass break ups, and two interceptions. He was a member of the All-Palm Beach county team and was second-team all-state in Florida. An honor roll student and active in community service, Xavier plans to study business at Miami this coming fall.
Coach Treadwell about Xavier Swinton: "Xavier is a very physical safety who comes up and hits you. He brings a lot of punch."
Tom Tupa: Quarterback, 6-4, 220, Brecksville, OH –Brecksville Broadview High School –Coach Jason Black
A third-team All-Ohio selection and a first-team all-conference selection, Tom was Broadview’s MVP and team captain. He threw for 6,000 yards and 53 touchdowns during his prep career, holding school records in both categories. Tom’s father played football for Ohio State and was an 18-year veteran of the NFL as a quarterback and punter. Tom plans to study business at Miami this coming fall.
Coach Treadwell about Tom Tupa: "When you recruit a quarterback, you want a guy who is hungry for the game behind the scenes. I've been blessed to be around some of those guys who just eat and sleep football, and let me just tell you, Tom is one of them. Football is just a way of life in the Tupa home.”
Nick Walter: Offensive Center/Long Snapper, 6-3, 265 –Pickerington, OH –Central High School –Coach Jay Sharrett
Nick’s Pickerington Central Tigers were the Division I state champs in Ohio in 2012, winning first-team all-conference, all-district honors, and honorable mention all-state. He captained his team as a senior, playing center and tackle. Nick’s an active participant in community service and was a member of high honor roll all four years in high school.
Coach Treadwell about Nick Walter: "Nick provides a lot of mass in the middle. He can be a long snapper, but can also take up some gap space. The value of long snappers has really become prominent and Nick is an excellent one."
Damon Washington: Defensive Back/Athlete, 5-11, 185, Kirtland, OH –Kirtland High School –Coach Tiger Laverde
Damon and his Kirtland High teammates won back-to-back state championships. He rushed for 1,903 yards last season, averaging more than 12 yards per carry and scoring 39 touchdowns. Damon was All-Ohio, All-Lake County and all-conference. Active in community service and an honor roll student, Damon plans to study business at Miami this coming fall.
Coach Treadwell about Damon Washington: "Much like Airion Kosak and Heath Harding, Damon Washington can play on either side of the ball. Some guys can run, but Damon definitely has a burst. He's got another gear. Damon will find his way onto the field because he's so athletic and such a physical player."
