The Sports Marketing Internship Academy is an opportunity for current Miami Students to learn about the ins and outs of Miami Athletics. This summer, there are four Sports Marketing Interns, two of whom are also student-athletes.  Swimmer Courtney Collett and synchronized skater Chandler Carroll reflect on their experiences so far with incoming student orientation.

Why did you want to Intern for the Sports Marketing department?

I wanted to intern for Sports Marketing because I wanted to get behind the scenes experience with the athletic department and start to understand the type of jobs or internships I could potentially be doing after I graduate.

What is the Orientation experience like as an Intern?

Being an intern is fun because I want to get more students involved with our Athletic Department. When I heard about Red Alert as an incoming freshman, I wanted to make sure I was a part of athletics at Miami. My goal is to involve freshmen who are up for some fun and/or like the sports atmosphere to those who don’t to start liking it more!

As a Student-Athlete, what do you take away from this experience?

Since this summer is about getting more students to attend games and events by joining Red Alert; as a student-athlete it helps me to know we are supported and our athletic department is successful.  It means a lot to me because students don’t realize the impact they make on athletes.

What’s your favorite thing about Oxford in the summer?

I enjoy the calm and relaxed atmosphere in the summer since there aren’t a ton of students and I like that there is parking all around campus and uptown!

Why did you want to Intern for the Sports Marketing department?

I wanted to intern because I want to be more involved with the school and the athletic department, as well as the fact that sports marketing is what I want to do in my career.

What is the Orientation experience like as an Intern?

The orientation experience as an intern is interesting. I like seeing all the new students come and be so excited about Miami. As an intern we have fun with it but also sell a lot at the same time.

As a Student-Athlete, what do you take away from this experience?

As a student athlete, I will take away what people really like or don't like about the athletic department and learn some things that hopefully we can add to the sporting events to make more people come out to them. I love getting the "inside scoop" on people's thoughts of the athletic department.

What’s your favorite thing about Oxford in the summer?

My favorite part about Oxford in the summer is the short lines at the stores and restaurants uptown. I also really like the small groups of people in the summer so you can get to know people on a more intimate level, especially with the other athletes since that is the majority of people in Oxford over the summer.

Miami Athletics utilizes Incoming Student Orientation to welcome the Class of 2017 and their families to Miami.  On each “Day 2,” Athletics has a table at the resource fair in which families can purchase Family Weekend football tickets and students can purchase Red Alert memberships!
