OXFORD, Ohio – Miami University field hockey coach Iñako Puzo announced the RedHawks’ 2013 schedule Wednesday. The challenging slate features eight home games, as well as contests against some of the top-ranked teams in the country.
The season opens with a three-game road trip that begins at Wake Forest on Aug. 30. The RedHawks will then make the quick trip up to Farmville, Va. for a neutral site contest against Radford on Sept. 1 and a game against host Longwood on Sept. 2.
A pair of difficult tournaments follow the next two weekends. Miami will head to Evanston, Ill. to take on Boston University on Sept. 8 and follow up with a game against host Northwestern the next day. Both teams were ranked in the top 25 last season. The following weekend, the RedHawks participate in the Terp Invitational in College Park, Md. On Sept. 14, they open play against American. The next day they take on host Maryland, a team that reached the NCAA Final Four last season after winning the previous two National Championships.
The 2013 home schedule begins on Sept. 18 when Miami welcomes Ohio State to Oxford. It is the first of five non-conference home games that will see teams such as UC Davis (Sept. 24), Michigan State (Oct. 6), Iowa (Oct. 20) and Providence (Nov. 3) visit the Miami Turf Field.
After one final road trip to Bloomington, Ind. to take on host Indiana (Sept. 27) and Penn State (Sept. 28), the RedHawks begin Mid-American Conference play when they travel to Ohio on Oct. 5. Miami will play each of its MAC rivals once, also traveling to Kent State on Oct. 26. The ‘Hawks will host Ball State (Oct. 11), Missouri State (Oct. 19) and Central Michigan (Nov. 2) in MAC play in 2013.
"This is an excellent schedule for this team,” said Puzo. “It is high intensity; we start with a strong opponent in our opening game and continue that trend throughout the entire season to the last game. We face some familiar opponents and are looking forward to taking on some programs that are new for us. This schedule will test us regularly and prepare us for each successive game."
The 2013 MAC Tournament will once again take place in Oxford on Nov. 8-9 thanks to the RedHawks’ 2012 MAC Regular-Season Championship. The top four teams will qualify for the single-elimination tournament. The winner will travel to the winner of the Patriot League Tournament on Nov. 12 for an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
