MUNCIE, Ind. – The Miami University softball team will take on Mid-American Conference foe Ball State this weekend in a key two-game series to continue its 14-game road trip. First pitch on Saturday is slated for 5 p.m. (new start time due to field conditions in Muncie), and the Sunday tilt is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
Miami has won four of its last five games, including a sweep of Ohio and a split with Akron last weekend in MAC play. The RedHawks are now 9-3 in the league and tied for the East Division lead with Kent State.
Ball State is a conference-best 28-12 overall and 12-0 in MAC play. The Cardinals had a nine-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday by Ohio State, but they have won 17 of their last 19 overall. Ball State is led offensively by junior Jennifer Gilbert. In addition to hitting an astounding .496, she leads the nation with 58 RBI and is second with 19 home runs. Freshman Nichole Steinbach leads the Cardinals in innings pitched and has accumulated a 12-7 record and team-best 2.29 ERA.
Ball State holds a 48-40 lead in the all-time series with Miami. Last season, the Cardinals swept a doubleheader with the RedHawks on April 15. Ball State won the first game 9-6, and took the nightcap, 13-12. The teams met again on May 11 in an elimination game at the MAC Tournament. This time Miami earned a 4-2 win, ending the Cardinals’ season.
After the series with Ball State, Miami will travel to Ypsilanti to take on Eastern Michigan in a Friday afternoon doubleheader on April 26. The scheduled start times for each game are 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
