Miami looks to continue its winning ways this weekend when it hosts MAC West rival Ball State in a Mid-American Conference series.

The Alumni Weekend games are slated for 6 p.m. Friday, 3 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. The finale has been deemed Walter “Smokey” Alston Day.

The RedHawks (16-18, 7-5) swept a pair of mid-week games with Eastern Kentucky to break a six-game losing streak. On Tuesday, Miami established season highs for hits (23) and runs in a 19-2 win in Richmond. The next night, the RedHawks posted a 6-5 victory at home. John Crummy was 8-for-8 in the series with five runs scored and seven runs driven in.

Ball State (16-17, 5-7) is coming off a 5-3 upset win over 19th-ranked Indiana on Wednesday. The Cardinals are tied for second in the MAC West.

Freshman Jake Romano leads the team in hitting with a .366 average. He had his first extra-base hit on Wednesday, a triple to the wall in left. Crummy has raised his average 52 points this week to .344 and is now third in runs batted in with 20.

Sophomore Matt Honchel stands third with a .336 average, while Kevin Bower is also over .300 at .318. Alex Johnson tops the club in both home runs (three) and RBIs (28).

Senior right-handers Brooks Fiala and Mac Thoreson head to the mound in their usual Friday and Saturday spots, but Miami is making a change on Sunday. Sophomore lefty Seth Varner will make his first start of 2013 in place of classmate Nathan Williams.

Fiala is 4-4 with a 2.98 ERA. He was a hard-luck 2-1 loser to Kent State last weekend, his second straight setback. Thoreson (3-4, 6.41) has won three of his last four decisions, but struggled against the Golden Flashes.

Varner has made 13 appearances this season, all in relief. He has not recorded a decision, holding a 4.50 ERA over 14.0 innings pitched.
