CLEVELAND – Miami University senior sprinter/hurdler Layne Baggett has been named Mid-American Conference Women’s Track Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday. The honor is the first such accolade of Baggett’s career, while she is also the first RedHawk to claim a MAC Women’s Track or Field Athlete of the Week award this season.

Baggett (Pittsburgh, Pa.) performed well on her home track as she helped Miami easily win its own Miami Invitational Saturday, earning 20 points for the RedHawks. She was the runner-up in the 100m hurdles in a season-best 13.50 seconds, which is the eighth-best time in school history and the second fastest of her career. She was the top collegiate finisher as an unattached runner won the race, giving Baggett 10 points towards team scoring. Her time is the top 100m hurdles time in the Mid-American Conference this year by 0.17 seconds and ranks 14th in the entire East Region, while it also qualified her for the MAC Championships. Baggett was over half a second ahead of the next collegiate finisher, who was third in 14.09, while competing in a field of 25.

Baggett also ran the leadoff leg of Miami’s winning 4x100m relay team that clocked 46.13 to win by over a second in a field of nine. The RedHawks earned another 10 points for the relay win. The 4x100m relay time ranks sixth in school history and is Miami’s second-best time this season.

Baggett, who is a two-time First-Team All-MAC performer and MAC 100m hurdles champion outdoors, was also named Miami’s Female Athlete of the Week on Wednesday for her efforts at the Miami Invitational.

Baggett and the RedHawks are back on the track this weekend, as she, along with select other sprinters, will run at the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn. April 12-13, while the majority of the women’s track and field team will compete at the All-Ohio Championships in Athens, Ohio on Friday and Saturday.
