OXFORD, Ohio – After 26 games on the road and a snow cancellation that delayed its first attempt at a home opener, the Miami University softball team will open the home season when it welcomes Butler Tuesday for a doubleheader beginning at 4:30 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on Miami All-Access in HD for those who have a subscription.
Miami (7-19 overall) is coming off a 3-1 weekend to begin Mid-American Conference play. The RedHawks swept a doubleheader at Toledo on Friday, taking the opener, 7-5, and then taking the nightcap, 11-10. On Saturday, Miami split with MAC East Division preseason favorite Bowling Green, winning the opener, 3-2, before falling in the second game, 5-1.
Kayla Ledbetter led the RedHawk offense with an incredible weekend. She finished 10-for-15 with eight RBI and six runs scored. Among her hits were two doubles, a triple and two home runs, giving her a slugging percentage of 1.333. She also drew a walk and was hit by a pitch for an on-base percentage of .706. For her efforts, Ledbetter was named MAC East Division Player of the Week.
Butler enters the doubleheader with a 10-14 record, including a 2-2 mark in the Atlantic 10. In their last action on March 28, the Bulldogs were swept by conference rival Dayton by scores of 6-3 and 5-3. Butler’s leading hitter is sophomore infielder Kristen Boros. She is batting .368 with four home runs and 14 RBI. Its leading pitcher is senior Jenny Esparza. She is 3-2 with a 1.88 ERA in nine appearances (nine starts) this season.
Miami resumes MAC play this weekend when it hosts Western Michigan on Friday for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. The RedHawks will then take on Northern Illinois for single games on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
