SAN DIEGO - The Miami University softball team got back on the winning track Thursday with a 4-3, nine inning victory over UT Arlington in the opener of the San Diego Classic II tournament. The RedHawks improve to 3-15 on the season, while the Mavericks fall to 12-9.
Miami got the offense going right off the bat with a run in the top of the first. Kayla Ledbetter led off with a double to left center. Taylor Shuey and Allie Larrabee each drew walks to load the bases with one out. Ledbetter attempted to score on a passed ball, but the catcher threw the ball back to the pitcher in time to record the second out. Jenna Modic followed with an infield single to second base that brought home Shuey and made it 1-0 in favor of the RedHawks.
In the top of the third, Ledbetter led off again and reached on a fielding error by the centerfielder. Shuey followed with a single through the left side. After UT Arlington recorded an out, Larrabee reached on an error by the second baseman to load the bases. Modic reached on a fielder's choice as the Mavericks forced Ledbetter out at home. On the same play, UTA attempted to get Shuey out at third as well, but the catcher threw the ball away, allowing Shuey to score. Kylie McChesney followed with a single shortstop that scored Larrabee and made it 3-0.
Megan Mattera kept UT Arlington off the board until a bases loaded single in the bottom of the third scored two runs and made it 3-2. It remained that way until the bottom of the sixth when the Mavericks led off with a triple, followed by a groundout that scored the run and tied the score at 3-3. Mattera finished the game allowing three earned runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings before being relieved by Paige Myers.
Miami got its first two runners on base in the top of the seventh, but was unable to score. Myers allowed an infield single in the bottom of the seventh, but Ledbetter threw out the runner when she attempted to steal, sending the game into extra innings.
Neither team was able to put up a threat in the eighth inning. In the ninth inning, the teams played the international tiebreaker rule. In the top half of the frame, Tiyona Marshall started on second for the RedHawks. Hailey Reed sacrifice bunted her over to third base. Ledbetter then singled to right field to bring Marshall home.
In the bottom of the inning, Myers forced the first two hitters to pop up to Reed, keeping the Mavericks runner stuck at second base. The next batter singled and advanced on the throw, putting runners on second and third with two outs. Myers refocused and got the final UTA batter to strike out looking to give Miami the 4-3 win.
Myers allowed no runs on three hits in 3.1 innings in earning her second victory of the season. She struck out four.
Ledbetter finished the game 3-for-5 with one RBI, while Shuey was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Modic also recorded two hits and an RBI for the 'Hawks on Thursday.
