FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. - For the third consecutive week, a member of the Miami University hockey team has been honored for his performance on the ice as freshman goaltender Ryan McKay was tabbed CCHA Warrior® Goaltender of the Week, the Central Collegiate Hockey Association announced Monday. The honor is the first CCHA weekly award of McKay's career and his second award from the CCHA this season.
After Miami lost Friday, McKay (Palatine, Ill.) was stellar in net Saturday at No. 6 Western Michigan in his lone outing of the weekend. He pitched his third shutout of the season and of his career, stopping all 29 shots he faced, including double-digit shots in each of the final two periods. McKay also helped Miami go a perfect 5-for-5 on the penalty kill Saturday, making eight saves with Miami a man down, including a 5-on-3 WMU power play.
With the 4-0 victory, McKay earned his seventh win of the season and fourth straight win, while picking up No. 2 star of the game honors. McKay continues to lead the NCAA with both a 0.98 GAA and .964 save percentage. He pitched his other shutouts Dec. 1 at Alaska and Oct. 12 vs. Colgate as his three whitewashes tie for second in the CCHA and seventh nationally.
Last week, redshirt senior forward Marc Hagel was named CCHA Postgame® Offensive Player of the Week while the week before that freshman defenseman Matthew Caito was tabbed CCHA Gladiator® Defenseman of the Week. A total of seven different RedHawks have now combined to win 10 CCHA weekly honors this year with McKay the first to win Goalie of the Week. Miami has won CCHA Postgame® Offensive Player of the Week three times as sophomore forwards Blake Coleman and Austin Czarnik each captured the award earlier this season along with Hagel. Caito has been named CCHA Gladiator® Defenseman of the week twice while freshman forward Riley Barber has garnered CCHA Gongshow® Rookie of the Week three times and freshman goaltender Jay Williams has received it once.
In addition to his CCHA Warrior® Goaltender of the Week award, McKay was also selected CCHA Gongshow® Goaltender of the Month for December when he also earned Hockey Commissioners' Association (HCA) National Rookie of the Month.
McKay and the No. 3/3 RedHawks are back on the ice this weekend, hosting No. 12/12 Notre Dame on Friday at 7:35 p.m. at Steve Cady Arena. The game will be televised nationally on CBS Sports Network. The two teams then head to Chicago for the OfficeMax® Hockey City Classic on Sunday when the sides will play outdoors at Soldier Field with puck drop set for 1 p.m. ET/noon CT. The outdoor game will air on Fox Sports Detroit, Fox Sports Ohio and several other Fox Sports affiliates.
