OXFORD, Ohio -- Miami University's football coaching staff announced Wednesday that 22 high school players had signed National Letters of Intent. The announcements were made during Miami's annual RedHawk Recruiting Live webcast.

Seven different states sent football players to the RedHawk program. Exactly half of the 22 are products from the state of Ohio. 

 "Our focus has always been to recruit the state of Ohio," said Treadwell. "We're always going to recruit our back yard. Much like last year's class, we had a lot of flexibility this year. It allowed us to bring in talent at every position across the board."

Coach Treadwell about Matt Smallbone: "Matt has a tremendous frame, so we're going to look at him at two positions. If he puts some weight on, he can be a great defensive end. Because of an injury his senior year, he didn't get to participate as much, so he's kind of a hidden gem. Because of his movement, we're really excited about him."

Earned first-team honors on the AP Division II All-Ohio squad ... among his other honors were Akron Touchdown Club Player of the Year, Inland District Defensive Player of the Year, conference Defensive Player of the Year, all-conference, team MVP and team captain ... on defense in 2012, he recorded 123 tackles, five QB sacks, 12 TFLs, two safeties and five interceptions, including two that were returned for touchdowns ... on offense, he averaged 28 yards per catch and scored five touchdowns ...
