OXFORD, Ohio-Miami Athletics is happy to announce Aaron Yonka as the 2012-13 Red & White Club Don Loss Volunteer of the Year. He will be honored during the Miami's hockey game vs. Bowling Green on Friday, Jan. 25, which is set for 7:35 p.m.
Yonka is a dedicated and passionate fan of Miami Athletics that is probably best known for proudly waving his hockey stick with flashing lights and a Miami flag attached to it at every Miami hockey game. In addition to providing financial support for Miami student-athletes through the Red & White Club, it is Yonka's often unnoticed willingness to give his time and energy volunteering for the Blue Line Club, assisting with Red & White Club events and assisting with various game-day activities that he is being recognized for with this award. Yonka has a spirit of enthusiasm, a positive attitude, and a passion for sharing his time, talents and love of Miami University. He embodies every characteristic that the Don Loss Volunteer of the Year Award represents.
Yonka is a 1996 graduate of Miami University, earning a degree in paper science and engineering. During his undergraduate years, he was a member of TAPPI (Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry) and also was involved with WMSR. A native of Cincinnati, Yonka began attending Miami football games during his high school years and continued to do so as an undergraduate. He was encouraged by a professor to attend a hockey game during his freshman year and began growing his love for Miami Athletics.
His support for athletics has continued since graduating from Miami. Yonka has been a member of the Red & White Club for the past seven years. He also has been a member of the Blue Line Club since 2007 and was elected to the BLC Board of Trustees in July 2012. He also is a lifetime member of the Miami University Alumni Association.
In addition to being a season ticket holder for many Miami sporting events, Yonka continues to support his alma mater by attending numerous athletic contests throughout the year.
The Don Loss Award is presented to a member of the Miami University Red & White Club in recognition of his/her dedicated service. This award is given annually in memory of Don Loss, a 1951 graduate of Miami University and former Red & White Club Board member, whose loving support for Miami Athletics helped lay the groundwork for the Red & White Club today.
The RWC is the membership organization that supports Miami University Athletics' annual scholarship needs. To become a member of the RWC, call 513-529-8097 or e-mail RWClub@MiamiOH.edu. Your gift DOES make a difference in the lives of Miami student-athletes.
