OXFORD, Ohio - Both hailing locally from within Butler County, the Miami Athletes of the Week connected by Frontier Communications for the week of Jan. 7-13 are junior guard Allen Roberts of the men's basketball team and senior swimmer Bekka Westrick.
Roberts
(Middletown, Ohio) spearheaded Miami to a thrilling 58-57 road win at Buffalo
Saturday, the RedHawks' first MAC win of the season and their first win at UB
since 2008. Roberts scored 22 points to lead all scorers, sinking the
game-winning free throws with seven seconds remaining. He was a scorching
8-of-11 from the field (.727) and was 2-of-3 from 3-point range. It was
Roberts' third 20-point game of the season and the fifth of his career. He also
scored 11 points against Northern Illinois in the RedHawks' MAC opener
Wednesday. For the week, he averaged 16.5 ppg, shot 54.5 percent from the field
and 85.7 percent from the free-throw line. Roberts also pulled down five
rebounds and had a steal during the week.
The Miami Male Athlete of the Week honor is the first of Roberts' career.
Winning
both of her individual races and one relay in Miami's 172-128 victory over
arch-rival Cincinnati, Westrick (Fairfield, Ohio) continues a torrid pace
towards the Mid-American Conference Championships in six weeks. In Friday's
race at Cincinnati, Westrick took individual firsts in the 50 freestyle (23.39)
and the 100 butterfly (55.23), winning the 100 fly by over a second. She was a
member of the winning 400 freestyle relay unit, as well, with a split of 51.72,
and helped the RedHawks take second in the 400 medley relay. In 17 total
individual races this season, Westrick has 14 first-place finishes, two
second-place performances and one third-place effort.
Westrick earned Miami Female Athlete of the Week for the second time this year and fifth time in her career after winning the honor three times as a junior.
Roberts leads the men's basketball team back on the court Wednesday when Miami hosts Bowling Green at 7 p.m. at Millett Hall. Westrick and the women's swimming team return to the pool this weekend for a pair of home MAC dual meets. First the RedHawks host Akron on Friday at 4 p.m. before welcoming Buffalo on Sunday at 2 p.m. both at Nixon Aquatic Center.
