FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. - For the second straight month, Miami University freshman forward Riley Barber has earned CCHA Gongshow® Rookie of the Month, the Central Collegiate Hockey Association announced Tuesday. Barber has garnered the award both times it has been handed out this season, winning it for October and now for November.
Barber (Livonia, Mich.) picked up in November where he left off in October, totaling nine points on two goals and seven assists in seven games, helping Miami going 4-1-2 and lifting the RedHawks to the top of the CCHA standings. He averaged 1.29 points per game during the month, notching at least one point in five of the seven games while tallying multiple points three times. His seven assists ranked second in the CCHA for November while his nine points and 1.29 ppg both tied for second in the CCHA for the month. He was first among rookies in the league in November in both points and assists.
Barber started his scoring with a pair of assists in a 4-2 win at Ferris State Nov. 3. In his next game Nov. 9 against Northern Michigan, the right winger tied a career high with three points on a goal and two assists. In the second game against NMU, Barber handed out another assist as he was named CCHA Rookie of the Week for his efforts.
The following weekend against Michigan State, Barber scored the first goal in a shootout win Nov. 16 and followed that up with the primary assist on the game-winning goal in a 2-0 shutout over the Spartans. In his final game of the month at Alaska Nov. 30, Barber recorded his third multi-point game of the month and fifth of his career. The Washington Capitals prospect scored the game-winning goal, which was his first career game-winner, and dished out an assist on Miami's first goal of the game. He was +3 in the contest, which is a career best, and finished the month with a +7 rating.
On the year, Barber is second on the team and in the CCHA with 18 points and is tied for the team lead with 12 assists, which also shares the CCHA lead. His 1.29 points per game leads all rookies nationally. He also has a +10 rating on the season.
Barber had similar numbers when he won October's CCHA Rookie of the Month, totaling eight points in six games on four goals and assists each. He has claimed CCHA Gongshow® Rookie of the Week honors twice this year, as well. Barber was also named to the U.S. National Junior Team preliminary roster on Tuesday.
Barber and the No. 3 RedHawks are back in action this weekend, hosting Lake Superior State Friday and Saturday at Steve Cady Arena. Puck drop is 7:35 p.m. Friday and 7:05 p.m. Saturday. Tickets can be purchased here.
