FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. - For the second straight week, a RedHawk has been named CCHA Gongshow Rookie of the Week as freshman goaltender Jay Williams garnered the honor Monday, the Central Collegiate Hockey Association announced.
Williams (McLean, Va.) backstopped Miami to a tie/shootout win and victory over Michigan State, helping the RedHawks earn five of six points over the weekend. For the weekend, he allowed just two goals, with only one coming even strength, while posting a 0.96 GAA and .941 save percentage in two games.
In Friday's 2-2 draw, Williams made 19 saves, giving up his only goals of the weekend, one of which came on the power play. The game then went to a shootout and Williams saved both MSU attempts allowing Miami to win in three rounds. On Saturday, he earned his first career shutout, stopping all 13 shots that came his way, while helping kill two Spartan power plays. Although he did not face many shots, he made a huge save midway through the third period with Miami up just 1-0 as MSU had a 2-on-1 rush and Williams made a shoulder save to preserve the shutout. Williams earned the Perani Cup. No. 1 Star of the Game Saturday.
On the year, Williams has started nine games in net while playing in 10, posting a record of 6-2-2. He carries a 2.18 GAA and a .915 save percentage in over 600 minutes of action.
The honor is the first of Williams' career. Last week, freshman forward Riley Barber was named CCHA Gongshow Rookie of the Week for the second time this year as he also earned the honor Oct. 22. The RedHawks have captured a CCHA weekly honor four times in all with sophomore forward Blake Coleman earning CCHA Postgame Offensive Player of the Week after opening weekend.
No. 5 Miami is off this weekend before returning to the ice Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 with a two-game series at Alaska.
