OXFORD, Ohio - Miami University volleyball coach Carolyn Condit announced the signing of three players to National Letters of Intent on Wednesday. Maris Below (Springfield, Mo./Kickapoo), Krista Brakauskas (Lemont, Ill./Providence Catholic) and Paige Hill (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson) will begin play for the RedHawks in the 2013 season.
"Maris, Paige and Krista will comprise one of the finest recruiting classes of my career at Miami," said Condit. "We are very proud to sign these three competitors who shine as brightly in the classroom as they have on the volleyball court."
Below is a four-year letterwinner at outside hitter for Kickapoo High School in Springfield, Mo. As a senior in 2012, she was named First-Team All-State, as well as to the Under Armour All-America Watch List. She was named first-team all-conference each of the past three seasons as she led the Volleychiefs to the league title each year. Below is also a strong student, having been named Academic All-State as a junior. She plays her club volleyball for the Springfield Juniors.
"Maris is a fine six-rotation ball control player and a spirited competitor," said Condit. "She is a very fine backcourt player, as well as a dynamic outside hitter. The speed of Maris' game is a 'cut above', and her excellent decision making reflects her advanced game intelligence."
Brakauskas is a three-year letterwinner at setter for Providence Catholic High School. She was named First-Team All-East Suburban Catholic Conference each of the past two seasons. She also earned a spot on the Sportstown Chicago 2012 Senior All-Star Team. Brakauskas plays club volleyball for First Alliance.
"Krista's game knowledge and quickness are advanced beyond most first-year college setters," said Condit. "Her competitive intensity combined with her calm demeanor is always present in her game. Krista's ability to find her middles and spread the offense will help improve Miami's offensive effectiveness and present complex challenges to opponents."
Hill is a four-year letterwinner at middle hitter for Jackson High School. She was dominant as a senior, recording 363 kills and 110 solo blocks. She led the Polar Bears to a 28-2 record this season and state runner-up finish. Hill was named First-Team All-Ohio in 2012 after earning third-team honors last season. She was selected to participate on the Division IV Senior All-Star Team, and will play in the 2012 State All-Star Match on Friday. Hill plays club volleyball for Academy Volleyball Cleveland.
"Paige is a high-energy athlete whose explosiveness and competitive drive is reflected in her dominant blocking ability," said Condit. "She is a powerful middle attacker who demonstrates her versatility in all net zones and knows how to score. Her intelligent, powerful performances were a big reason her high school team appeared in the state finals."
The 2012 edition of the Miami RedHawks will conclude their season on Saturday, Nov. 24 when they host Cincinnati at 4 p.m.
