OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University women's basketball team got its season off to a successful start with an 80-70 exhibition win over Tiffin on Sunday afternoon. It was the only scheduled exhibition for the RedHawks this season.
Senior guard Courtney Osborn looked to be in midseason form as she recorded a double-double with 20 points and 13 assists. The 13 assists would have tied a school single-game record that she already shares with Carrie Kent and D'Nelle Seiple.
Jumpers from Haley Robertson and Kirsten Olowinski, followed by a three-pointer from Osborn would help lead Miami to a 7-0 lead early. Erica Almady kept the offensive game going by scoring three straight layups, but the Dragons would fight back by hitting several three-pointers. A jumper by Mary Kate Campbell would cut the RedHawk lead to one at 19-18 with 11:22 remaining in the half before Osborn answered with another three to put Miami back up four.
Tiffin would eventually tie the game at 29 at the 5:10 mark. Freshman Jessica Rupright would answer with a three-pointer to give the lead right back to the 'Hawks. Rupright showed her potential as she hit three layups down the stretch to help Miami close out the half on a 15-4 run and take a 44-33 lead into the break.
Osborn led Miami with 12 points in the first half, while Rupright had 11. The RedHawks shot 65.5 percent (19-for-29) during the period.
The freshmen continued to contribute early in the second half. Hannah McCue hit a three-pointer, while Maddie McCallie hit a layup to increase the RedHawk advantage to 13 at 53-40 with 16:30 to go. Miami would go into a long scoring drought as the Dragons went on a 24-4 run over the next eight minutes to take a 64-57 lead.
The RedHawks fought right back as Rupright and Olowinski each hit layups to cut the deficit to three. On the next Tiffin possession, Osborn stole the ball and hit the layup despite being fouled. She converted on her free throw to tie the game at 64 with 7:00 remaining. Osborn then found Robertson for a layup and recorded another three-point play to put the RedHawks up, 69-64 with 5:41 to go. The Dragons hit a pair of free throws to end the 12-0 Miami run, but McCue banked in a three-pointer to make it 72-66 in favor of the RedHawks. Miami would play solid defense over the final four minutes as it held Tiffin to only four more points as it took an 80-70 win.
Five players finished with double-digit scoring for the 'Hawks. In addition to Osborn's 20, Rupright had 17, Robertson had 11 and Almady and Olowinski had 10 each. Miami shot 58.3 percent (35-for-60) for the game. The Red and White finished with nine blocks and 13 steals.
Miami will open the regular season on the road when it heads to Eastern Kentucky on Friday for a 5:30 p.m. game. Tim Bray will have the call on Miami All-Access for those who have a subscription.
