CLEVELAND-The Mid-American Conference announced its 2012-13 men's basketball preseason media poll on Tuesday morning, and the Miami University RedHawks were predicted to finish sixth in the East Division with 31 votes.
Despite the prediction of the media, first-year Miami head coach John Cooper is optimistic about the outlook for the RedHawks this season.
"We are a program in transition with a new coaching staff and a different style of play. We are just trying to get our guys to make that adjustment, and I think they've done a good job at being open minded to change and working hard," said Cooper. "Our focus is to work hard every day to get our group better as individual players and as a team. We have been pleased with the progress so far and know that it won't be easy, but we are very capable of having a successful season."
Ohio was tabbed to win the East Division and also was predicted to win the FirstEnergy MAC Men's Basketball Tournament with 18 votes. Akron was projected to finish second in the East Division and was the only other team to earn votes to win the MAC tournament with six. Toledo was tabbed to win the West Division, followed by Eastern Michigan.
Miami hosts Maryville at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31 in its lone exhibition game before tipping off the season at NC State on Friday, Nov. 9. The RedHawks host Grambling State in their home opener on Tuesday, Nov. 13.
