CINCINNATI, Ohio – Behind a pair of individual victories and two relay wins, the Miami University men’s track and field team finished in second place at the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational, hosted by the University of Cincinnati at Gettler Stadium Friday and Saturday.

The RedHawks compiled 189 points at the meet as they were just beat out by Southeast Missouri State, which won the meet with 196 points. The host Bearcats took third with 184.5 points, followed by Eastern Kentucky (49) and Marquette (47.5) in fourth and fifth, respectively. Butler (45) and Xavier (27) were the next two finishers in the 12-team field team that also included select athletes from Notre Dame and Kentucky.

Senior Jarrod Eick (Hartville, Ohio) won the 5000m run in 14:35.27 as Miami’s lone individual winner on the track while classmate Matt Marol (Evanston, Ill.) was not far behind in fourth in 14:52.98. Freshman Peter Stefanski (Aurora, Ill.) was Miami’s only other individual winner, as he earned first in the high jump for the third straight meet, clearing 2.08m/6-9.75, just shy of his personal best. Junior Matt Gambill (Dover, N.H.) was fifth in the high jump, topping 1.98m/6-6.

The RedHawks captured both relay events as freshman Jason Bailey (Springboro, Ohio), junior Sam Spallinger (Pandora, Ohio), sophomore JaShawn Combs (Dayton, Ohio) and junior Jahquil Hargrove (Norristown, Pa.) combined to finish first in the 4x100m relay in 42.21, just edging out Southeast Missouri State. In the 4x400m relay, Hargrove, junior Robert Balzano (Poland, Ohio), freshman Adam Bodrick (Columbus, Ohio) and sophomore Skyler Coburn (La Porte, Ind.) also claimed first in a time of 3:17.09, a second ahead of Cincinnati, as Miami picked up 20 points between the relays.

In addition to his relays, Hargrove was the runner-up in the 400m dash in 47.97 while Balzano was right behind in third in 48.57 and Bodrick was fifth in a personal-best 49.37. Spallinger took third in the 200m dash in 22.61 while Bailey was eighth in the 100m dash in 11.45.

In the 800m run, senior Jack Spilman (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) placed third in 1:52.12 while junior Kevin Brown (Lewis Center, Ohio) was sixth in 1:52.60. Redshirt senior Brett Wagner (Toledo, Ohio) finished third in the 3000m steeplechase in 9:35.32 with freshman Matthew Pelletier (Burton, Ohio) right behind him in fourth in 9:40.55.

In the hurdles, Combs crossed in third in the 110m hurdles in 14.57 while classmate Sam Chester (Medina, Ohio) was right behind in fourth in 14.80. In the 400m hurdles, Coburn was the runner-up in 55.20.

In other field action, senior Sam Wildeman (Naperville, Ill.) claimed second in the pole vault clearing 4.70m/15-5 while freshman Jacob Hensh (Uniontown, Pa.) was fifth with a personal-best clearance of 4.55m/14-11. Senior John Cantwell (Holland, Pa.) earned another runner-up in the long jump with a personal-best leap of 7.26m/23-10 while Spallinger was fourth (6.90m/22-7.75). Cantwell also posted a personal best in the triple jump, capturing third with a jump of 14.46m/47-5.25.

In the throws, junior Rob Stein (Villa Park, Ill.) placed second in the discus with a heave of 48.67m/159-8 while he finished third in the shot put (16.22m/53-2.75). Freshman Paul Golen (Elmhurst, Ill.) was fourth in the shot put with a toss of 14.76m/48-5.25. In the javelin, sophomore Tyler Yee (Florida, N.Y.) earned runner-up with a throw of 56.95m/186-10 while junior Taylor Celestin (Mason, Ohio) was right behind in third (53.10m/174-2).

Miami returns home next weekend to host the Miami Invitational Friday and Saturday, April 5-6, in the first of two home track meets this year at George Rider Track.
