Oxford, OH – The Miami women’s cross country team will open their season Friday at the Ohio Invitational in Athens, Ohio at 4 p.m. The team will be running a six-kilometer course at the Ohio University Golf Course.

“It’s a good opportunity to get our feet wet at the 6K distance because we usually don’t run a 6k this early in the season," head coach Kelly Phillips said. "It’s also a good opportunity for the freshmen because they haven’t run one yet.”

The Red and White are looking to build upon their success last season after winning their third Mid-American Conference championship in six years. They went on to finish 11th out of 33 teams at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional.

“We have everybody back, everyone trained hard this summer and they are all really fit,” Phillips said. “We look better than last year.”

The RedHawks return a strong core of senior runners, led by Jess Hoover, Anna Lamb and Melissa Girgis. Hoover paced the team through all of their meets last season, including a personal best time of 21:00 over a 6K course at the Pre-National Invitational.

The ‘Hawks also will field a strong freshman class led by Alex Cameron, Maria Scavuzzo and Alesha Vovk, who were all standout high school performers.
