COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Miami field hockey team suffered a 5-1 loss to No. 5 Syracuse in its season opener in Columbus. Freshman Cooper Hudspeth scored her first career goal in her first game as a RedHawk, while senior Valentina Neira tallied the assist.
Sophomore goalkeeper Alysa Xavier started out hot for the Miami saving each of the Orange's first six shots on goal to keep the game scoreless for the first 16 minutes. However, Lauren Brooks broke the tie with a goal from five yards out to give Syracuse a 1-0 lead.
The Orange added a goal in the 27th minute to take a 2-0 lead at the half. Brooks added her second goal in the 51st minute and Lies Lagerweij scored on a breakaway in the 52nd minute to make it 4-0. Syracuse's fifth goal came in the 61st minute off a penalty corner.
Miami fought back in the 68th minute when Hudspeth took a pass from Neira and beat the goalkeeper to the upper right of the cage for the team's first goal. Neira's assist was the 14th of her career after leading the team in assists last season with eight.
Freshman Kiley Merrill had the team's other shot on goal, while Xavier posted nine saves in the game.
The RedHawks will open their home slate with No. 14 Northwestern on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. The game against the Wildcats will be the second of six games against teams in the preseason top-20.
