FORT COLLINS, Colo.—Matchups have been released for the Cancun Challenge, tournament officials announced Tuesday afternoon. The Miami University men’s basketball team will host games on Nov. 22 and 30 while playing games in Cancun on Nov. 25 and 26 as part of the four-game tournament.
The RedHawks will host Liberty on Saturday, Nov. 22 and then head to Cancun for two neutral-site games. In the Riviera Division bracket, Miami will face Northwestern on Tuesday, Nov. 25. Depending on the outcome of Tuesday’s games, Miami will face either Virginia Tech or Northern Iowa on Wednesday, Nov. 26. The RedHawks then return home to host Elon on Sunday, Nov. 30. All game times are currently TBD and will be announced at a later date.
Miami holds a 2-0 record against Liberty, facing the Flames in 2003-04 (71-55) and 2004-05 (88-44). MU owns a 1-0 mark against Northwestern, defeating the Wildcats at a neutral site during the 1974-75 campaign, 89-88 in overtime. The Nov. 30 game will be the RedHawks’ first meeting with Elon. Should the Red and White face Northern Iowa on Nov. 26, it also would be the first meeting between the programs. A matchup with Virginia Tech on Nov. 26 would be the third meeting against the Hokies. The series is tied at 1-1 with previous meetings coming in 1979-80 (84-93) and 1985-86 (83-82 OT).
The Cancun Challenge is one of the most unique basketball events held each year. Previous champions include Vanderbilt (2008), Kentucky (2009), Missouri (2010), Illinois (2011), Wichita State (2012), and Wisconsin (2013).
Seating is limited for this exclusive event, and all fans should book land travel packages through Triple Crown Sports for admission into games in Mexico.
