WINSTON SALEM, N.C. – Kicking off its 2014 outdoor season, the Miami University men’s track and field team posted two event victories during day one of the Wake Forest Invitational, hosted by Wake Forest University at Kentner Stadium.

Junior Ryan Moncrieff led the RedHawks in the 3000m steeplechase, winning the event with a clocked time of 9:34.19. Freshman Vince Moeglin had a strong start to his collegiate career, finishing fifth in the race in 9:48.65, followed by sophomore Matthew Pelletier who took sixth in 9:52.82.

Sophomore Joe Stewart had Miami’s second victory of the day, winning the 5000m run in 14:37.53, 11 seconds faster than senior Dave Wing who placed runner-up with a time of 14:48.23. Sophomore Matt Stewart then finished third in the event in 14:52.70.

In 1500m action, sophomore Zack McBride placed seventh in the 1500m B-section run after crossing the finish line in 4:05.28, while sophomore Ed Wigton placed 11th in the 1500m invitational run with a clocked time of 4:00.28.

In sprint action, junior JaShawn Combs placed fourth in the 110m hurdles finals with a time of 14.66, and senior Robert Balzano finished 16th in the 400m dash in 49.81.

Over in the field events, Tyler Yee improved on his already No. 2 all-time mark in the javelin by unleashing a throw of 211-9 to take eighth in the event. Rob Stein also picked up a top-five finish by taking fifth in the shot put with a throw of 52-10 1/4.

Freshman Grant Cole was the only RedHawk to compete in the Charlotte 49er Classic, hosted by the University of North Carolina at the Irwin Belk Track. Cole took second overall in the decathlon with 3515 points, finishing behind Charlotte’s K’Vonte Scott who won the event with 3883 points. Cole won two of the five events, placing first in the 100m in 11.13 and the long jump with a mark of 7.07m.

Action resumes at the Wake Forest Invitational Saturday at 9:30 a.m. with women’s javelin, followed by the men’s high jump B-section and long jump at 10 a.m. The track heats up at 11 a.m. with the women’s 800m run, with the men’s 800m run scheduled for 12 p.m. The meet concludes at 3:55 p.m. with the 4x400m relay.
