CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Miami University softball team dropped the finale of the Michelle Smith Spring Break Tournament to Saint Joseph’s, 4-2, on Sunday. The RedHawks fall to 9-12 on the season, while the Hawks improve to 7-10.

St. Joe’s struck first with two runs in the top of the second. Miami answered back with one swing of the bat in the bottom half of the inning. Junior outfielder Bree Lipscomb sent a solo shot over the left field wall for her fourth home run of the season to cut the RedHawk deficit to 2-1.

In the top of the third, Saint Joseph’s hit a two-run home run to take a 4-1 lead and complete its scoring.

It remained that way until the bottom of the sixth. Senior second baseman Kristy Arbour led off with an infield single. Two batters later, Lipscomb doubled to deep left center, allowing Arbour to score all the way from first. The RedHawks would get a runner on base in the bottom of seventh as well, but were unable to bring her home allowing St. Joe’s to earn a 4-2 victory.

Lipscomb finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored. She recorded eight RBI in five games down in Florida. Arbour, sophomore outfielder Taylor Shuey and junior pitcher Megan Mattera also recorded hits for Miami.

The RedHawks return home on Thursday when they host Wright State for a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.
