OXFORD, Ohio – For their performances last week junior golfer Luke Shaughnessy and sophomore women’s track and field distance runner Laura Bess are Miami’s Athletes of the Week connected by Frontier Communications for the week of Feb. 10-16.

Shaughnessy went a perfect 3-0 in his Mid-American Match play matches this week. He defeated Xavier’s Matt Gerard 3 and 2 in round 1, Bowling Green’s Josh Bialecki 5 and 4 in round 2 and Toledo’s Oliver Holtsberry 3 and 2 in round 3. He helped lead the RedHawks to a 2-1 record in three matches and a fifth-place finish.

This is the first time in Shaughnessy’s career he has earned Miami’s Male Athlete of the Week honor.

Bess continued her stellar indoor season with a breakout performance at the GVSU Big Meet over the weekend. The sophomore won the mile run with a personal-best time of 4:49.21, beating her prior season best by six seconds. That time is the second fastest in Miami history and ranks third among all Mid-American Conference runners. Since her indoor debut at the Kentucky Track & Field Invitational (Jan. 17-18), Bess has shaved over 18 seconds off her time in the mile.

This is the first time in Bess’ career she has earned Miami’s Female Athlete of the Week honor.
