OXFORD, Ohio – After both led their teams with impressive season-opening debuts, freshman middle hitter Paige Hill and senior runner Dave Wing have been named Miami’s Female and Male Athletes of the Week connected by Frontier Communications, respectively, for the week of Aug. 26-Sept. 1. These are the first Miami Athletes of the Week for the 2013-14 season.

Hill (Massillon, Ohio) had an amazing debut for Miami Volleyball in earning MVP honors at the Belmont Invitational this past weekend. She had 28 kills for a team-leading 2.80 kills per set average. She also had an amazing 23 blocks (2 solo and 21 assisted) for an average of 2.30 blocks per set. Her 12 block assists in a win against Memphis were only two short of the school record for a match. Her .407 hitting percentage for the week led Miami, and she also scored on six service aces.

Wing (Naperville, Ill.) had a strong opening meet for Miami Cross Country, earning overall runner-up honors at the Flyer 5K Challenge, hosted by the University of Dayton Saturday. He was Miami’s top scorer, clocking a time of 15:39.0, as he finished just 1.1 seconds behind the race’s winner, Jordan Redd from Ohio State. His second-place finish tied his personal-best finish in a collegiate race (2011) while he improved upon his seventh-place showing at last year’s Flyer 5K. Wing was competing against a field of 110 runners, which included athletes from OSU, Dayton, Xavier, IUPUI, Wright State, Northern Kentucky and more. Wing led Miami to a third-place finish at the meet.

The Miami Athlete of the Week honor is the first such accolade for both Hill and Wing.

Hill and the rest of the volleyball team are back on the court this weekend, as the RedHawks host the Miami Invitational at Millett Hall. The RedHawks face Evansville on Friday, Sept. 6 before welcoming Northern Kentucky the next night. Wing and the cross country team are also in action at home this weekend, as the RedHawks run at their own Miami Invitational Saturday, Sept. 7, when Miami will unveil its new cross country course.
