OXFORD, Ohio – If you are a fan of smash-mouth defense, then the veteran-laden 2013 Miami RedHawks should be right up your alley.
Of Miami’s 11 starting defensive positions, 10 have a letterwinner in place. Four of defensive coordinator Jay Peterson’s starters—two defensive linemen, a linebacker and a defensive back—have earned three letters and three others—a lineman and two defensive backs—have won two letters.
If, as coaches say, “it all starts up front”, then Miami’s foursome could be something special this coming season. The senior triumvirate of AUSTIN BROWN (LT, 6-2, 174, Woodbridge, VA), WES WILLIAMS (BOSS, 6-3, 242, Houston, TX) and MWANZA WAMULUMBA (RT, 6-3, 261, Fort Meade, MD) has eight letters worth of experience and is joined by promising sophomore BRYSON ALBRIGHT (DE, 6-5, 213, Cincinnati, OH). That foursome has combined for 41 career tackles for loss so far. This group also has some solid, yet widely untested, backups in sophomore letterwinners MITCH WINTERS (RT, 6-5, 255, Mississauga, Ont.) and WESLEY SCOTT (T, 6-3, 245, Ridgeland, SC), talented rising sophomore J’TERIUS BROWN (BOSS, 6-3, 233, Milledgeville, GA), junior transfer JALEN JOHNSON (LT, 6-8, 225, Columbus, OH) and junior walk-on ALBERT PHILLIPS (DE, 6-2, 223, Holland, OH).
The linebacker crew’s two-deep boasts five letterwinners, led by three-time letterwinner CHRIS WADE (SLB, 6-1, 219, Sr., Slidell, LA). Wade paced the RedHawks in tackles last year with 128 stops. Wade will be backed up by senior COLLIN BOUCHER (6-2, 221, Kettering, OH), who also is one of Miami’s top special teams players. Emerging from the spring as the starting weak-side linebacker is sophomore JOSH DOOLEY (6-0, 201, Mason, OH) Letterwinner TYLER TUCKER (Jr., 6-2, 223, East Lansing, MI), who sat out all of 2012 with an injury, is sure to receive lots of playing time as well. The RedHawks’ starting middle linebacker is sophomore KENT KERN (6-1, 224, Toledo, OH), who lettered a year ago as a true freshman. Rising sophomore NATE GERBUS (6-1, 220, Cincinnati, OH) will sub for Kern.
The defensive secondary is led by senior field cornerback DAYONNE NUNLEY (5-8-191, Monroeville, PA), whose 12 career interceptions are just four short of the Miami record 16 career picks totaled by RON CARPENTER, his current coach. Nunley, a three-time letterwinner, will be backed up by junior veteran CHRISHAWN DUPUY (5-9, 178, New Orleans, LA). Miami’s starting boundary cornerback will be two-time letterwinner JARRELL JONES (Jr., 5-10, 174, Columbus, OH), while sophomore MARSHALL TAYLOR (6-4, 172, Cordele, GA) came out of the spring as the back-up. Junior BRISON BURRIS (5-10, 179, Humble, TX), a two-year veteran, will be the starter at free safety. Senior DANTE TAYLOR (6-3, 191, Springfield, VA), also a two-time letterwinner, will sub for Burris. Rising sophomore JAY MASTIN (6-1, 217, Centerville, OH) won the starting job as the boundary safety during spring drills. A freshman likely will back up Mastin at that position.
