OXFORD, Ohio - Leading each of their teams to a 1-1 record on the week, the Miami Athletes of the Week connected by Frontier Communications for the week of Dec. 3-9 are ice hockey freshman forward Riley Barber and basketball senior forward Kirsten Olowinski.

Barber (Livonia, Mich.) scored his second career game-winning goal in the hockey team's 3-2 win Friday over Lake Superior State. He tallied his game-winner 2:09 into the third period with a wicked wrister from just above the left circle that beat the Lakers' netminder top-shelf over his left shoulder. He finished with four shots on goal in the game and a +1 rating. In Saturday's 1-0 loss, Barber fired a career-high six shots on goal as Miami outshot LSSU 46-29, but couldn't find an equalizer despite limiting the Lakers to just one power play goal. He is tied with teammate Austin Czarnik for the CCHA lead with 19 points while he now has seven goals on the year. Barber also leads all freshmen nationally averaging 1.19 points per game.

The Miami Male Athlete of the Week honor is the first of Barber's career. He was also named CCHA Rookie of the Month for November last week, his second straight month winning the award, and was named to the U.S. National Junior Team preliminary roster on Tuesday.

Olowinski (Erie, Pa.) continued her strong play from the previous week, averaging a double-double with 16.5 points and 12.5 rebounds per game in two games. In leading Miami to a 72-54 win over Wright State on Tuesday, she scored 12 points and brought in a season-high 17 rebounds. During that game she became the 21st player in school history to record 1,000 career points. It was her 33rd career double-double. She followed that up with 21 points and eight rebounds on Saturday at Cleveland State. Olowinski also had three blocks in that game and passed the 900 career rebound mark. For the week, Olowinski shot 50 percent (13-for-26) and was 87.5 percent (7-for-8) from the free throw line. She also had three steals on the week.

This marks the second time in Olowinski's career, but first this year, she has earned Miami Female Athlete of the Week, also earning the honor once last year as a junior. She was named MAC East Division Player of the Week for her efforts last week as well, the second straight week she's won the award.

Barber and the No. 5 hockey team hit the road this weekend for a two-game series at in-state rival Ohio State Friday and Saturday. Olowinksi leads the women's basketball team back on the court Sunday when the RedHawks play at Chicago State at 3 p.m.
