OXFORD, Ohio - A Miami RedHawks soccer team member received yet another individual accolade following Sunday's NCAA Tournament victory over the University of Tennessee. Junior midfielder Kayla Zakrzewski was named to Top Drawer Soccer's Team of the Week Monday for her efforts during Miami's 3-2 overtime victory in Knoxville, Tenn.
Zakrzewski played all 95 minutes against the Lady Vols and eventually scored the game-winning goal just 4:43 into the first overtime. Miami countered a Tennessee offensive attack when sophomore Kelsey Dinges found Zakrzewski on the left flank in Tennessee's portion of the field. The junior midfielder then cut inside the 18-yard box and fired a shot past the UT goalkeeper into the right side of the goal to win the game. The goal was Zakrzewski's ninth of the year, her third coming in game-winning fashion.
The RedHawks took all of the momentum from the Lady Vols when Dinges scored a spectacular goal from the top of the box with just nine seconds left in regulation to make the game 2-2. Miami made the most of its scoring opportunities as the 'Hawks scored three goals on just 10 shots in the contest.
Miami now travels to Charlottesville, Va. to play the Duke Blue Devils on Friday, Nov. 16 in the second-round of the NCAA Tournament. The match will be played at the University of Virginia, as the Virginia Cavaliers are hosting the second and third round matches this weekend. The match is scheduled to kick off at 4 p.m. E.T.
