CLEVELAND - Coming off a Mid-American Conference regular-season title and an unbeaten MAC campaign, the Miami University women's soccer team continued to bring in the awards Thursday when the MAC announced its specialty awards and All-MAC teams for women's soccer. Senior Jess Kodiak earned MAC Offensive Player of the Year while freshman Haley Walter was tabbed MAC Freshman of the Year. A total of five RedHawks earned All-MAC honors.
In addition to her MAC Offensive Player of the Year honor, Kodiak was selected to the All-MAC First Team along with juniors Katy Dolesh and Kayla Zakrzewski and sophomore Kelsey Dinges. Walter garnered Second-Team All-MAC recognition as the lone freshman to land on either All-MAC squad while she was also the lone RedHawk tabbed to the All-Freshman Team. Kodiak becomes the fifth RedHawk to win MAC Player of the Year and the first since Kathleen Vistica in 2006 while Walter is just the third player in program history to pick up MAC Freshman of the Year with Sara Lund the last to do so in 2007.
The four first-teamers were the second-most among MAC schools as Central Michigan placed five on the First Team while Eastern Michigan took the final two spots. Miami has not placed four on the All-MAC First Team since putting five on the squad in 2002 while the five All-MAC honorees are also the most since 2002 when six RedHawks were recognized.
Kodiak
(Naperville, Ill.), who was a First-Team All-MAC selection last year as well, leads
Miami with 29 points on the year, which is second in the MAC, 14 of which came
during league play. Her 10 goals tie for the team lead and are also tied for
second in the MAC, while her nine assists are third in the conference. The 2012
team captain tallied three multi-goal games on the year, recording five points
twice, including Oct. 21 vs. Bowling Green. Both of her game-winning goals on
the year came in MAC play, including at Ohio Sep. 28.
Walter
(Cincinnati, Ohio) had a stellar rookie season, totaling 23 points, which ties
for fifth in the MAC, while her eight goals tie for fourth in the league. She
also handed out seven assists, which ties for fifth in the league. Walter
notched 11 points in league play, including four goals, and led the conference
with five game-winning goals overall on the year, including three in MAC play. The
speedy outside midfielder scored two goals Aug. 26 against Milwaukee and
notched her biggest goal Oct. 19 at Central Michigan, scoring the game-winner
in double overtime to clinch the MAC title for Miami.
Like
Kodiak, Dolesh (Chardon, Ohio) was a repeat selection to the All-MAC First-Team
after matching Walter's stats with 23 points on eight goals and seven assists,
all of which rank in the top five in the MAC. Dolesh led Miami with 16 points
in league play, scoring six of her eight goals, while the 16 points were the
most in conference action. She recorded a goal and an assist three times during
the season, including in wins at Kent State and over Bowling Green, and scored
the game-winner Oct. 14 at Toledo. Dolesh is now a three-time All-MAC
performer, landing on the Second Team as a freshman in 2010.
Zakrzewski
(London, Ont.) also became a three-time
All-MAC honoree with her First-Team nod Thursday, as she has earned Second-Team
All-MAC each of her first two years in Oxford. She tied for third in the MAC
with 24 points on seven goals and a school single-season record 10 assists,
which ranks second in the MAC. The aggressive flanker recorded 15 of her points
in MAC action, including seven helpers. Zakrzewski logged five points in the
MAC opener Sep. 21 vs. Akron with her lone multi-goal game of the year while
also adding an assist. She had a goal and two helpers Oct. 5 in a win over
Western Michigan, as well. Both of her game-winners came against MAC teams,
scoring in the closing minutes in a win over Eastern Michigan Oct. 7 and
scoring early in a 1-0 quarterfinal win over Ohio last Sunday.
Rounding
out Miami's quartet of First-Team All-MAC recipients, Dinges (Smithton, Ill.),
who picked up her first All-MAC honor Thursday, is tied for third in the MAC
with 24 points while her 10 goals tie for second with Kodiak. She also added
four assists during the season. Fifteen of her points came during MAC
competition, including six goals. Dinges scored two goals in a game three
different times during the year, including back-to-back Oct. 7 vs. Eastern
Michigan and Oct. 12 at Northern Illinois. In the NIU game, she tallied a
career-high five points, also handing out an assist, and scored the game-winner
with less than five seconds remaining to break a 2-2 tie. Dinges finished with
three game-winners on the season.
All five of Miami's All-MAC performers played and started all 20 games on the season. All but Dolesh each earned MAC Offensive Player of the Week once during the season as well, while Zakrzewski earned the weekly honor twice on the year.
In addition to all of Miami's All-MAC honorees, head coach Bobby Kramig was named MAC Coach of the Year for the first time while at the helm of the women's program after leading the RedHawks to a 17-2-1 record and a 10-0-1 mark in league play this year. He was twice named MAC Coach of the Year while coaching Miami's men's team.
The top-seeded RedHawks resume MAC Tournament action at home Friday, facing fourth-seeded Kent State at 11 a.m. at Miami Soccer Field. No. 2 seed Central Michigan and No. 6 seed Toledo follow at 2 p.m. in the day's second semifinal.
