AKRON, Ohio - The Miami University golf team returns to action Monday when it participates in the Firestone Invitational. The tournament takes place at the par-72 North Course of the famous Firestone Complex. The RedHawks will play 36 holes on Monday and one final round of 18 holes on Tuesday.
"Our time at home since getting back from Illinois State has been incredibly productive," said head coach Zac Zedrick. "Our qualifying this past week was highly competitive, so we feel good about our preparation heading into Firestone. The North Course is not as famous as the South, but it's a great design and poses a lot of challenges off the tee and around the greens. We're ready to go and I'm excited to see how we compete this week."
Temperatures are expected to be in the 50s in Akron over the next two days with mornings dipping into the 30s. Representing Miami in these cool conditions will be senior Brett Tomfohrde, redshirt junior Mark MacDonald, sophomore Luke Shaughnessy and freshmen Jack Sparling and Daniel Schwarz. Sparling will look to continue his momentum from his debut tournament two weeks ago, when he tied for 13th at the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate.
The RedHawks will have a chance to see where they stand at the moment in the Mid-American Conference, as five of their league rivals will be joining them for the Firestone Invitational. In addition to host Akron, also playing will be Ball State, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan and Ohio. Other teams participating are Davidson, Illinois State, Iowa State, Kansas State, Louisville, Maryland, Nebraska, Samford, Saint Mary's, USC-Aiken and Wisconsin.
