OXFORD, Ohio-Miami University's synchronized skating teams unveiled its 2012-13 schedule, head coach Carla DeGirolamo announced Wednesday. In addition to their competition schedule, the RedHawks will perform during an intermission at six hockey games as well as holding two exhibitions in Oxford and skating in the annual Ice Show.
Miami will visit the state of Michigan often as five of the competitions will be held there throughout the season. Miami opens its competitive skating season at the Dr. Richard Porter Classic in Ann Arbor, Mich., Dec. 1-2. All three teams will skate in the season-opening competition.
The junior team returns to the ice Jan. 11-12 at the Junior World Qualifier in Fraser, Mich. If the team finishes among the top teams, the RedHawks will advance to the 2012 Synchronized Skating World Junior Championship, March 8-9 in Helsinki, Finland. In conjunction with the Junior World Qualifier, the collegiate and senior teams also will be in Fraser, Mich. that weekend to compete at the Mid-America Championships Jan. 12-13.
Miami's collegiate and junior teams will be in action Jan. 25-26 at the Midwestern Championships in Kalamazoo, Mich.
Making the program's first trip outside of Michigan, the senior team will represent Miami and the United States when it travels to Gothenburg, Sweden for the Leon Lurje Trophy Jan. 26-27.
The RedHawks will have a month to fine-tune their programs before all three teams head to the 2013 U.S. National Championships in Plymouth, Mich., Feb. 28-March 2. The senior team looks to return to the world stage with a top-two finish at nationals. If the RedHawks finish among the top two, they will advance to the 2013 ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships in Boston, Mass., April 4-6.
Miami's senior team finished third at the U.S. Championships last season and seized the prestigious Professional Skaters Association "Best Performance Award" for its short program to "Blue Suede Shoes". The junior team also looks to earn a medal at the U.S. National Championships this season.
The RedHawk collegiate team captured its eighth-straight national crown to tie Michelle Kwan's singles' record of eight consecutive national titles last year. Miami's collegiate team boasts the most consecutive national titles of any team at any level of synchronized skating and seeks the tie the record for all of U.S. figure skating this year, looking to equal pairs skaters' Theresa Weld Blanchard and Nathan Niles nine straight titles from 1918, 1920-27 (there was no competition held in 1919).
"We are very much looking forward to the 2012-13 season," said DeGirolamo. "I especially like that we will be taking all three teams to most of our events so we can support each other with a big cheering section. It also worked out nicely that all three teams have a good chunk of time after their last event before nationals to prepare for the National Championships where we plan on going in and making a big statement in our quest for championships."
The first time Miami will perform in 2012-13 will be when it holds its first exhibition of the season at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3. All three teams will be performing all of their competitive programs as part of their Parents Weekend Exhibition. Prior to the U.S. National Championships, Miami Skating will hold a Nationals Send-Off Exhibition at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22 where all three teams again will perform all of their competitive programs. Both exhibitions will take place in Coach Cady Arena at the Goggin Ice Center. Admission is free and open to the public.
Each team also will perform twice at a Miami University hockey game. The collegiate team will perform at an intermission at the Nov. 9 hockey game. The senior team will skate during the Nov. 16 hockey game, while the junior team will skate at the Nov. 17 hockey game. Miami's collegiate and junior teams will perform on respective nights at hockey's Feb. 1-2 weekend series, while the senior team will skate during hockey's Feb. 15 game.
The RedHawks' final performance of the 2012-13 campaign will be at the Annual Miami University Ice Show, which will be the weekend of April 26-27.
