INDIANAPOLIS - Miami University senior Jordan Goffena is a late addition to the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds field, the NCAA announced over the weekend, and joins four other RedHawks on the men’s track and field team who will compete May 24-26 in Jacksonville, Fla.
Goffena (Sidney, Ohio), who was ranked 49th in the 110m hurdles when the original qualifying list was revealed last Thursday, was able to move up to the 48th and final qualifying spot after someone in the 110m hurdles had to pull out due to an injury. He earned a berth with his time of 14.23, which he clocked March 24 at the Vanderbilt Black & Gold Invitational and ranks him third in school history in the event. Goffena is the only representative from the Mid-American Conference in the field and runs in the first round Friday, May 25 at 5 p.m. Should he advance to the quarterfinals by finishing in the top 24, he would run again Saturday, May 26 at 7:05 p.m.
Goffena advances to Jacksonville along with classmates Nathan Hoch, who will compete in the discus, and Adam Ruiz, who will participate in the hammer throw. Sophomores Jahquil Hargrove (400m dash) and Rob Stein (discus) will also represent Miami at the NCAA East Prelims.
The NCAA East Preliminary Rounds will be held at the University of North Florida’s Hodges Stadium. The top 48 athletes per event from both the East and West Regions qualify for the NCAA Prelims, which serves as the opening round(s) of the NCAA Championships. The top 12 finishers in each event at the East and West Preliminary Rounds then move on to the NCAA Championships, which are hosted by the University of Oregon in Eugene, Ore. June 6-9.
